About the Department
DEFINITION:Under the direction of the D/C Superintendent, this position is responsible for leading crews in performing skilled and semi-skilled general labor, construction, maintenance and repair work.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL AND RELATED FUNCTION STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Coordinates and assigns staff, vehicles and equipment; checks work activities for compliance to quality standards.
- Trains work crew in City procedures and in the use and maintenance of equipment and tools; works with staff to correct performance deficiencies.
- Reports and responds to problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
- Collects information, purchases supplies, prepares reports, and maintains records as required.
- Provides customer service, resolves complaints and service issues, and responds to questions within scope of authority.
- Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment and identifies/reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
- Performs additional duties as apparent and/or assigned
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- High school diploma/equivalent and minimum 3 years experience in the maintenance/construction of water or wastewater systems and operation of heavy equipment such as dump trucks, and backhoes. (Backhoe operation abilities will be tested.)
- Must be skilled in the use and care of various hand and power tools including power saws, cutting and tapping machines, jackhammers, ditch witch, hydrolift, confined space equipment, etc.
- Ability to follow oral/written instructions, perform strenuous physical work under varying weather conditions, and lift/move items weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Must be able to interact effectively with staff and the public in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
- Ability to report to work in a timely manner, work non-regular hours including holidays/evenings/weekends, participate in on-call rotation, and be able to arrive at the work site within a thirty (30) minute response time when emergency situations occur.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and obtain a Class B CDL license within six (6) months of hire date; have and maintain an acceptable driving record.
