School-Based School Counselor Mentor Job Description

2024-2025

 

Program Purpose: 

  • To provide ongoing support to:
    • Counselors new to the profession of school counseling,
    • Counselors new to Berkeley County Schools,
    • Counselors who are returning after having been out of education for a time,
    • Permanent substitutes who are new to a position, programmatic level, or grade level.
  • To grow school counselor capacity through ongoing support and professional development at all grade levels.

 

School-based Mentors:

  • Purpose: To provide on-site support to counselors new to the school.
  • Reports to: Principal and/or assistant principal and Director of Academic Counseling
  • Terms of service: One year
  • Stipend: $800
  • Required qualifications:
    • WV Professional School Counselor Certificate
    • Minimum of three years of experience
    • Successful evaluations for last three years of employment
    • Currently working for Berkeley County Schools
    • Demonstrate the following competencies:
      • A strong understanding of Policy 2315, the Comprehensive School Counselor Plan
      • A strong understanding of the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Dispositions and Standards for Student Success and how to implement them
      • A strong understanding of the FERPA/Student Confidentiality, the Mandated Reporting Law and Title IX
      • The ability to integrate technology into the delivery of a School Counseling Program
      • The ability to motivate people
      • The ability to be a team player
      • An interest in assisting counselors new to the profession and new to the school
    • Responsibilities:
      • Be the school-based mentor for mentee within the home school.
      • Attend Mentoring training as scheduled by Director of Academic Counseling.
      • Attend mentoring training every year serving as a mentor.
      • Be available to new counselors prior to school starting, including attending designated portions of New Teacher/Counselor Orientation.
      • Meet with each mentee for a minimum of once a week via face-to-face, telephone, email or video conferencing. At least one face-to-face meeting is to occur each month.
      • At least one on-site visit to support the needs of the counselor and not for evaluating.
      • Maintain a Mentoring Log (provided during training) and submit at the end of each quarter.
      • Attend support meetings with Director of Academic Counseling and other school-based mentors in programmatic levels (elementary, secondary)
      • Participate in assigned professional development sessions to keep abreast of county initiatives.
      • Complete and submit documentation to Director of Academic Counseling as scheduled.
      • Communicate openly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
      • Maintain confidentiality and function in a professional manner at all times.
      • Assist mentee in a support role rather than an evaluative role.
      • Must be available for commitments beyond the instructional day when necessary.
