About the Department
Responsible for maintenance and repairs to the Recreation Department facilities.
Position Duties
- Establish and maintain logs on equipment.
- Maintain, repair and troubleshoot existing mechanical control systems and their components.
- Set up a schedule for a preventative maintenance management system relating to the Recreation Department facilities.
- Perform tasks involving plumbing, building and electrical.
- Perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties including removing snow from walkways, sidewalks and driveway, trimming brush and weeds, fertilizing grounds and trash removal.
- Respond to emergency calls relating to Recreation facilities or other Borough facilities' maintenance and operation as needed.
- Use hand and power tools such as saws, drills, hammers and snow blowers, jack hammers, pumps, brush cutters, generators, compressors, welders, mowers and various other equipment when required to perform a task.
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, forklifts, graders, flatbed trucks, utility trucks, and similar motorized equipment.
- Repair and perform preventative maintenance on exercise equipment.
- Assist with the development of and work within an annual budget for maintenance and repairs.
- Perform custodial as needed.
- Assist in the chemical safety/Right-to-Know program.
- Work a 40-hour week with some weekend, evening or holiday responsibilities when needed.
- Provide instruction to other employees of this or similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Recreation Supervisor.
- Assist the Aquatics Manager in proper chemical use and safety precautions for the Pool facility.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical maintenance problems and make estimates of material and repair parts requirements.
- Ability and desire to learn through training, including classroom and self-directed training, and on-line and in-person testing.
- Working knowledge of general maintenance skills including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical; heating and cooling systems; and ventilation systems.
- Basic knowledge of pool water treatment mechanics and chemistry.
- Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures including all safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform all assigned manual labor tasks, both skilled and unskilled, under rigorous conditions.
- Ability to read and understand electrical drawings, pneumatic drawings and blueprints and understand schematic symbols.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Willingness to perform various job-related duties as situations require, a strong sense of teamwork, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to coordinate activities, compile data and process forms and information.
- Possess physical stamina and endurance.
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each listed activity also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, reaching, climbing on stools and ladders, driving vehicles, frequent exposure to inclement weather, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds.
Other Qualifications
LICENSES:
Valid State of Alaska driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the Borough's insurance carrier. The following licenses/certificates must be current or obtained within 6 months of employment:
- State of Alaska CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with B endorsement
- CPR or BLS card
- First Aid Certification
- CPO (Certified Pool Operator)
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Three to four years general maintenance experience.
- Experience with swimming pools and/or water systems desired.
