The Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is a research collaborative with a mission to advance the environmental right to know. We focus on issues of environmental justice, data justice, information accessibility, and corporate and government accountability.  

EDGI is hiring a part-time FOIA Repository Manager. The environmental FOIA repository was launched in 2020 as a collaborative project of Toxic Docs and the Sierra Club in order to offer a publicly accessible, keyword-searchable collection of the federal documents obtained by over twenty green and open-government organizations under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The FOIA Repository Manager will work closely with our partners at ToxicDocs and will be responsible for (1) preparing docs submitted by participating groups for upload into the repository; (2) liaising between participating groups, consolidating and expanding our network of NGOs doing FOIA work; and (3) analyzing and communicating findings related to the repository, FOIA, and other policies. This is a part-time position with an estimated commitment of 10 hours per week. 


Key Responsibilities

The FOIA Repository Manager will be responsible for: 
  1.  Preparation of the records for the repository. This entails meticulously cataloging and processing a high volume of PDFs.
  2.  Liaising with other participating groups. This involves communication with organizations writing FOIA requests and using FOIA’d records, including coordination of new documents for processing and collaborative development of new requests.
  3.  Communicating findings. This includes the authorship of short, informally written blog posts, social media posts, and other announcements to interest the public in notable trends or particularly striking records.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including a strong command of file management and cloud services; 
  • Ability to use Linux command line and some background in the AWS ecosystem 
  • Background in environmental, health, and/or FOIA policy is a plus.

About EDGI

EDGI is a distributed collaboration operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit Multiplier.. EDGI works to:

  1. Investigate and analyze the inner workings of federal environmental policy, through interviewing of agency staff, as well as data and documentary collection and analysis;
  2. Monitor and analyze changes to, web-based information about the environment, energy, and climate provided by the federal government;
  3. Develop new ways of making federal environmental data more accessible to the public;
  4. Imagine, conceptualize, and move toward environmental data justice;
  5. Advocate for improved federal data and information governance policies and practices; 
  6. Prototype new organizational structures and practices for distributed, collective, effective work rooted in justice.
