Job Responsibilities
Schedule
- The hours for this position could be between Sun-Sat 6am-11pm based on the needs of the department.
- The Vehicle/Equipment Mechanic is considered essential personnel. This means that this person must be willing to work a flexible schedule including call-in work that could encompass various shifts, weekends, holidays, Institute emergencies, and times other than normal work schedules.
- Maintain and repair RIT vehicles and equipment. This includes:
- Maintain and process work records of expended labor and material costs into computerized system.
- Evaluate, diagnose & repair vehicles and equipment.
- Perform complex equipment repair work involving automotive, light duty/heavy duty trucks and other equipment.
- Inspect equipment, analyze trouble and plan sequence of repair.
- Perform road service on equipment as required.
- Computerized record keeping and documentation.
- Investigate concerns and equipment malfunctions from various departments .
- Analyze performance of vehicles/equipment.
- Working knowledge and skills to perform the tasks of welding, brazing and cutting, hydraulics, engine rebuilding, sharpening blades, and minor auto body repair.
- Stewardship of the University property, equipment, and tools. This includes all department equipment and all University landscape and pro.
- Winter snow removal and seasonal maintenance. This includes proper techniques for removing snow from roads, walkways, parking lots, and stairs. Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and powered equipment necessary to perform these tasks.
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- 1-3 years’ experience with inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles, equipment, and components.
- The individual hired for this position will be required to have a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Please refer to RIT's Vehicle and Driver Safety Procedures for specifics regarding what is considered in an MVR review.
- Must be able to build and maintain relationships with a wide-rage of academic and/or other student service departments.
- Considerable knowledge of internal combustion engines, automotive electrical, mechanical and electronic components, transmissions differentials, alternative fuel vehicle systems, and other components of automotive systems.
- Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance activities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to select and use appropriate PPE equipment for tasks performed and conditions encountered.
- Ability to and willingness to be self-motivating and willing to perform manual labor.
- Ability to withstand irregular and long hours during winter weather conditions.
- Ability to tolerate prolonged exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, unpleasant odors and loud noises.
- Computer skills in using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and, Excel), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Project Tracker, and Oracle applications.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
- Ability to serve as a steward for all university property, equipment, and tools.
- Able to lift 50 pounds.
- Leads by example in the skills of customer service and positive interaction with employees, vendors, students, and supervisors by mutual respect for all people’s needs.
- Ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and interact in a tactful and logical manner. Continually reinforce FMS' commitment to conduct at all times that is courteous, friendly, helpful and cooperative to students, staff, co-workers, and visitors.

Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from a vocational school in automotive Technology
- NYS DMV Inspectors Certificate
