The HVAC Technician is a full-time, benefited position responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimizing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across campus facilities. This role ensures a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient environment for students, faculty, and staff. The technician collaborates with the facilities team to prioritize tasks, address urgent repairs, and support long-term sustainability goals
This position requires on-call availability on a rotating schedule for emergency response and may involve the operation of heavy equipment.
Position Duties
Ensures the functionality and safety of the Laramie County and Albany County campus facilities by overseeing the maintenance, repair, and inspection of HVAC and mechanical systems to support uninterrupted campus operations.
Routine Inspections and Repairs
- Performs scheduled inspections, filter changeouts, maintenance, and repairs on all HVAC systems, including roof top units, boilers, chillers, pumps, natural gas lines.
- Maintains and repairs hydronic heating and cooling systems, ensuring efficient operation of these systems across campus facilities.
- Services and maintains commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as they relate to HVAC, working with HVAC and automation specialists as necessary.
- Safely operate torches as required for tasks such as brazing and soldering, and other HVAC installations or repairs. Isolate all sources of energy except for testing.
- Inspects, installs, services, cleans, and maintains HVAC systems including kitchen equipment, refrigeration, domestic boilers, cooking equipment.
- Oversees and performs duct and HVAC cleaning to ensure safe and effective conditioned air in all buildings, residence halls and kitchen areas.
- Participates in an on-call rotation to respond to HVAC and other emergencies, providing prompt and effective solutions to minimize disruption and ensure safety.
- Develops and implements emergency response plans for HVAC incidents, coordinating with other Plant staff as needed.
- Assists with snow removal in designated area as needed.
Periodic Inspections
- Conducts regular inspections, cleaning, and preventative maintenance of all HVAC and mechanical systems, following established schedules and best practices.
- Identifies potential issues and addresses them proactively to prevent equipment failure or safety hazards.
- Maintains accurate records of all inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities for compliance and reporting purposes.
- Orders and maintains inventory/schedule for parts, services, equipment and tools.
- Ensures adherence to local, state, and federal regulations for HVAC, refrigeration, glycol containing mechanical systems, coordinating with inspectors as necessary.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required
- While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
- There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and computer use.
- An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- For lift exceeding 50 pounds, an assisted lift technique will be required
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
- The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be instances of somewhat loud environments when working with certain tools and equipment.
- An employee must be able to transition between stationary tasks and activities to frequent movement activities quickly and as needed.
- Comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in HVAC maintenance, with extensive knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, mechanical systems, and hydronic heating and cooling.
- Highschool Diploma/GED or equivalent
- Licensed or Certified HVAC Technician.
- Refrigeration certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the college insurance carrier requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10 years of experience in commercial HVAC maintenance and mechanical systems.
- Prior experience in an educational, institutional, or large-scale commercial setting is preferred.
- OSHA 10 certification or equivalent safety certification.
- Experience with electronic work order systems and maintenance scheduling software.
