POSITION SUMMARY
The School District of Clayton is seeking an experienced Communications Coordinator to strengthen and support both internal and external communications. The ideal candidate is a strategic communicator with a strong background in journalism and demonstrated expertise in digital communications. This individual is an exceptional writer and storyteller who is skilled in website content creation and digital tools.
The role involves producing high-quality content across print and digital channels, including press releases, news articles and newsletters. The Coordinator will also lead multimedia projects, such as video production, to effectively engage diverse audiences.
The successful candidate will be highly organized, collaborative and capable of managing a broad range of communication initiatives. Strong project management skills and experience in communication planning are essential to succeed in this fast-paced environment.
REPORTS TO: Chief Communications Officer
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Develop and implement strategic communication plans that effectively advance the District’s mission, vision and goals, while ensuring consistent, clear messaging across all platforms and materials.
- Lead the District’s website migration project, overseeing content strategy, site architecture and design to ensure usability, functionality and accessibility.
- Oversee ongoing website maintenance and continuous improvement post-launch.
- Provide expert technical support and training to District and school staff on effective use of digital communication tools and platforms.
- Serve as a key communicator by identifying impactful stories and producing engaging content such as press releases, feature articles, newsletters and multimedia for internal and external audiences.
- Support crisis communication efforts.
- Serve as creative director for video and photography projects, including scriptwriting, visual planning and production coordination, to support key messages across digital platforms.
- Assist with planning and facilitating community engagement events and public forums to build trust and promote transparent, two-way communication.
- Strategically evaluate the need for emerging communications tools and make ongoing recommendations for improvement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS – Required qualifications to effectively perform job. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive experience in journalism, media relations, public affairs or school PR.
- Exceptional written, verbal and visual communication skills.
- Proficiency in website content management systems with knowledge of best practices in user experience and accessibility.
- Requires strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.
- Ability to write, edit and produce professional content on deadline using AP Style.
- Experience building websites using FinalSite or other similar platforms.
- A strong eye for effective visual design; video and photo editing skills are a plus.
- Excellent customer service skills in working with students, families, staff, administrators, and the public.
- Ability to solve problems and initiate creative solutions.
- Ability to train others and teach technical procedures and concepts.
- Strong understanding of K–12 education issues and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to operate standard office and classroom equipment.

- Requires daily travel to multiple work sites within the District using reliable, personal transportation.

- General office conditions. Exposed to moderate noise levels.
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience: 5+ years of experience preferred.

TIMELINE
