About the Department

The Cosumnes Community Services District is seeking to hire a full-time Senior Park Maintenance Worker in the Park and Golf Operations Division to join our team. This position may be required to work weekends, holidays and after-hour emergency calls. Senior Park Maintenance Workers in the Park and Golf Operations Division are represented by Teamsters Local #150.

Under general supervision, performs the more complex, difficult, and specialized work of a crew responsible for providing construction, maintenance, and repair to assigned District infrastructure including parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, sports fields, swimming pool, and public restrooms; provides technical and specialized assistance to the assigned management and supervisory staff; and performs related work as assigned.

Salary Information
The salary range for the Park Maintenance Worker, Sr. classification is between $24.42 - $34.97 hourly. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge and shall be no more than mid-point of the salary range.

Position Duties

The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of a specific statement on duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required.  
 

  • Performs a wide range of maintenance and repair duties of District infrastructure including parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, swimming pool areas, sports fields, and public restrooms.
  • Provides maintenance support to a variety of special projects, particularly for those that pertain to the assigned area.
  • Inspects assigned District infrastructure for safety issues, structural integrity, and possible future work projects and programs, and appropriately marks areas that need to be repaired.
  • Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned systems and infrastructure.
  • Operates, maintains and performs minor repairs of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as instructed.
  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Maintains public use, shop and garage, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions; may direct the work of assigned contractors and volunteers.
  • Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Monitors, maintains, and purchases materials, tools, parts, and equipment as needed and assigned.
  • Responds to emergency calls for repairs particularly in instances which involve public safety.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
     
    When assigned to irrigation:
  • Evaluates irrigation needs based on a variety of factors including weather conditions, event schedules, and equipment performance; adjusts irrigation programs accordingly.
  • Serves as lead for special projects involving the most complex installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems and related equipment.
  • Monitors water usage for multiple assigned park and landscaped sites and ensures compliance with water usage plan and guidelines; makes adjustments as necessary to ensure that water usage does not exceed allotted amount.
  • Operates specialized irrigation equipment including centralized irrigation clocks, wire tracers, metal detectors, and water pressure recorders.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical problems related to assigned irrigation systems and equipment.
     
    When assigned to welding/fabrication:
  • Performs skilled welding duties in the repair, installation, fabrication, and maintenance of parks and recreation structures and amenities.
  • Evaluates projects and independently determines the appropriate welding techniques to achieve desired results.
  • Conceptualizes and fabricates components to retrofit onto playground structures and infrastructure to comply with regulatory requirements and generally accepted standards.
  • Designs and creates unique pieces in support of recreation, special events, and other District departments.
     
    When assigned to equipment operation:
  • Operates a wide range of manual and power-driven hand tools.
  • Skillfully and safely operates light and heavy equipment including tractors, backhoes, front loaders, skip loaders, and lawn mowers.
  • Assumes responsibility for equipment operation in the most difficult circumstances and/or the most complex projects which require a high degree of skill and knowledge.
  • Performs inspections to ensure that equipment is in safe working order; reports unsafe or damaged equipment; performs basic maintenance and repair of equipment.
     
    When assigned to pool and filtration:
  • Performs inspection and maintenance duties of pool, pool deck, and pool equipment including pumps, motors, and controller rooms.
  • Performs pool chemistry tests to ensure chemical levels are compliant with regulatory requirements; evaluates chemical needs based on a variety of factors including weather conditions and usage, and makes adjustments to levels accordingly; orders chemicals to ensure there is a readily available supply at all times.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs pool equipment such as chemical delivery systems, filters, pumps, and motors.
  • Performs maintenance on pool heaters and ensures water temperature is optimal.

Minimum Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
 
Education and Training: 

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. 
Experience: 
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience comparable to a Parks Maintenance Worker with Cosumnes Community Services District including at least one (1) year of responsible work experience in the assigned area of specialty. 
  • Please note: Twelve (12) months of part-time experience will be considered equivalent to six (6) months of full-time work. 
Special Requirements: 
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license with a satisfactory driving record as determined by the District and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Certification as a playground inspector, pesticide applicator, pool operator, or other closely related certification or license is desirable. 
Knowledge of: 
  • Principles and practices for maintaining and repairing park infrastructure including irrigation systems and appurtenances.
  • Principles, practices, tools, materials, and techniques specific to the assigned area of specialty.
  • Basic mathematics.
  • Safe driving rules and practices.
  • Basic computer software related to the work.
  • The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment.
  • Operational characteristics of equipment specific to assigned area of specialty.
  • Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and District staff. 
Ability to: 
  • Perform construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on park and recreation infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Perform assigned maintenance and repair duties with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
  • Operate specialized maintenance and repair equipment.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the assigned area of specialty.
  • Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
  • Read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Typical Working Conditions 
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis in various types of weather and temperature including seasonal conditions such as extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, and moisture.  Frequent exposure to loud noise, vibration, dust, dirt, chemicals, grease, smoke, fumes, and other environmental substances.  Depending upon assignment, positions in this classification may require travel to multiple work sites daily in a CSD vehicle.  Some work is accomplished in an indoor office setting.

THE PROCESS:

Application Review (Pass/Fail): All applicants must complete and submit an application by the final filing deadline. Applications will be reviewed for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position.

  • Supplemental Questions: The supplemental questions are considered a part of the application process. All required questions must be completed before the application can be submitted. The supplemental questions will be used to evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of the applicant's education, training, and experience. Depending on the size of the applicant pool, the supplemental questions may be used as a part of the supplemental screening.
  • Supplemental Screening: The district will review the responses to the supplemental questions of all candidates meeting the minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates in the applicant pool will be selected to continue in the selection process.

Oral Panel Interview - All candidates who pass the application review will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview. 

Notification: Candidates will be notified of their status after completing the first interview phase.
 
Final Interview - Candidates who pass the first interview panel may be invited to a final interview. 

Conditional Offer: Candidates selected from the process receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:

Background Check:  A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check;
Driving Record:  
A State of California, DMV driving record printout will be required, upon successful 
 completion of the background check.

Upon successful completion of the background check, candidates must complete the following before final appointment:
  • Medical: A clear physical and drug will be required.
  • Work Eligibility: The District participates in E-Verify to confirm authorization to work in the US.
Failure to meet these pre-employment requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the conditional offer of employment.

Probationary Period: A probationary period of one (1) year is the final phase of the selection process.
