Summary

The Chaplain delivers effective and efficient Chaplaincy Services to patients, their loved ones and staff of all faith traditions.  Connects patients with their local faith communities when possible. Reporting to the Director of Patient and Family Services.

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Theology or related field.

Certification, Registration & Licensure

  • Ordination as a Minister, Priest, or Rabbi with a Master’s of Divinity or equivalent from an accredited seminary.

  • Certified, or eligible for certification, as a Board Certified Chaplain by and in good standing with a national chaplaincy certifying body preferred.

  • Two to four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE).

  • Up to date denominational endorsement for ministry in the health care setting.

Experience

  • At least 1 year in hospital ministry - professional experience preferred, volunteer or educational experience considered.

  • Two to three years of pastoral experience, including working in a secular institution

Responsibilities

  • Provides personal support, pastoral care/counseling, and grief counseling to individual patients and families.

  • Visits all patients who request chaplaincy services or are referred by social worker, nurse, patients, physician, and family in distress.

  • Provides, assists, and /or arranges for services for holidays and special occasions as needed or required.

  • Provides education related to religious/spiritual/cultural diversity, grief and loss, and wellness.

  • Organizes and implements programs for spiritual support of patients, families, and staff.

  • Works with Patient Access Services to maintain accurate religious affiliation information for patients.

  • Acts as worship and sacramental leader, counselor, advocate-mediator, educator, spiritual guide, and grief counselor.

  • Serves as the liaison to area’s religious community and maintains procedures for clergy of all faiths to provide spiritual care to their hospitalized patients.

  • Coordinates pastoral care of hospital patients by community clergy. Administration of the sacraments when local clergy are not available or the patient has no faith community.

  • Timely documentation of assessments and visits using our electronic medical record system.

  • During working hours, participates in and responds to disasters, community traumas and related situations.

  • Available to provide additional coverage for unusual situations such as disaster or community traumas or other incidents where spiritual support would be needed with discretion outlined by the department manager and chaplain.

  • Mentors Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and other applicable students. Assists in the coordination of pastoral care volunteers, trainees or staff who are assisting in the provision of pastoral care in particular patient areas including Eucharistic ministers.

  • Maintains ecclesiastical and professional cognate group relationships and maintains professional competence by participating in continuing education programs and peer review.

  • Maintains working knowledge of all faith traditions and the influence of diverse cultures on spiritual practices.

  • The Laconia and Franklin based position is expected to frequently travel between campuses.
