JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for supervising the construction, maintenance, and operation of the underground power and lighting distribution system.

Position Duties

  • Supervises the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical transmission/distribution systems to ensure effective operations; troubleshoots essential systems to maximize efficiency and performance; evaluates existing facilities to optimize resources and promote cost savings.

  • Provides direction and supervision to subordinates; ensures productivity, adherence to policies, effective performance evaluations, and individual skill development.

  • Prepares reports and documents pertaining to work orders, GIS, materials, and subordinates; prepares paperwork that assists in the maintaining of accurate inventory and GIS records; prepares crew evaluations and implements work plans to facilitate development.

  •  Practices and enforces safety rules and ensures proper use of personal protective equipment.

  • Prepares hardware and material for installation; frames and sets poles, hangs transformers; makes up primary and secondary termination of de-energized conductors; splices all sizes and types of conductors; installs, repairs, and maintains electric power systems.

  • Cleans line trucks to assure safe and efficient working conditions.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two (2) years’ experience in a related field of work.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class "A" Drivers License or ability to readily obtain within 6 months.

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of electric line construction and maintenance practices.

  • Knowledge of safety rules, practices, methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the installation and maintenance of electrical lines.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards associated with the work.

  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the Rocky Mount electrical system, including the areas served by various substations and feeders.

  • Skill in the interpretation and application of federal, state, and local policies, codes, and laws.

  • Skill in the supervision of personnel.

  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.

  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports.

  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Skill in setting priorities for competing projects.

  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.

  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skills in oral and written communication.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include OSHA, NESC, and NEC regulations; City policy manuals; the APPA safety manual; and ElectriCities construction standards. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with other City staff, contractors, representatives of other utilities, customers, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is light work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion, sitting, standing, and walking. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily outdoors where exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, and noise is typically encountered. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES :This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
