Overview
The Local Cup is an innovative community-run start-up coffee shop located in the Near Northwest Neighborhood of South Bend. This neighborhood coffee shop serves about 100-150 people each week through a pay-it-forward model, allowing people of all income levels to be served at the coffee shop.
This position supports the work of the Local Cup by operating and maintaining a pay-it-forward coffee shop and mentoring teen interns. Candidates for this position must have reliable access to transportation by car or bicycle.
Specific Responsibilities
Learn and perform all aspects of coffee shop operation, including: opening, drink preparation, pour over coffee brewing, closing/cleanup
Articulate The Local Cup mission and pay-it-forward system to customers
Provide a welcome presence and help create a friendly atmosphere. Part of the job involves drinking coffee and talking to people
Follow all health codes
Make sure that clean-up is complete at the end of the day
Attend weekly Site Leader meeting
Manage and supervise 1-2 teen interns and work with them behind the counter
Attend bi-weekly Leadership Training meetings for our teen interns
Provide positive modeling and mentorship to teen interns
Training
Attend Community Engagement Leader Training the first weekend of classes
Attend weekly Community Engagement Leader meeting
Orientation with Site Supervisor
Qualifications
Enthusiastic, mature and possess strong interpersonal communication skills
Organized and detail-oriented
Able to follow directions, but also see what needs to be done
Self-motivated and able to take initiative on your own
Skilled at working with a team
Able to relate well with people from various socio-economic and racial backgrounds
Comfortable in leadership position
Ability to work with little direct supervision
Ability to stay calm and focused in a busy environment
Flexible and able to problem solve in the moment
Prior experience with teens a plus
Love of coffee a plus!
Reliable access to transportation by car or bicycle
Current student of Saint Mary’s College eligible for Federal Work Study/Community Service
Preferred Schedule
Schedule may vary. The coffee shop’s current hours are on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. The Local Cup team typically meets one evening a week. Most students serve an average of 8 hours/week.
Benefits
Hourly rate of $12.00/hour
Conditions of Employment
All student employees (FWS or non FWS) are only allowed to work 20 hours a week between all on-campus positions.
Students who hold more than one on-campus position are required to inform their supervisor in order to prevent exceeding the maximum hours allowed to work.
All on-campus positions will be terminated in the spring semester on the last day of exams.
