About the Department
Forsyth County Communications department is seeking a motivated, experienced and dedicated Assistant Director of Communications to help lead our 911 operations. This leadership role supports the Director in the day-to-day management, strategic planning, and coordination of emergency communications services ensuring the center runs effectively, efficiently, and in alignment with public safety standards.
This is an emergency response position and is subject to working nights, weekends and holidays.

Position Duties
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of management techniques and practices.
- Considerable knowledge of system operations including enhanced 911, microwave and multiple site operations.
- Extensive knowledge of the operations of a wide variety of communications equipment used in emergencies.
- Extensive knowledge of rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission.
- Extensive knowledge of city and county geography and location of roads and streets.- - - - - Knowledge of the operations of a wide variety of communications equipment used in emergencies to include wireless technology and technology industry trends as it relates to 9-1-1 call processing and dispatching.
- Knowledge of communications systems to include telephone, radio, computer aided dispatch, mobile data terminals, VHF and paging equipment.
- Knowledge of fire and rescue/EMS procedures.
- Knowledge of federal, state, county and city codes applicable to 9-1-1 communications centers.
- Knowledge of the capabilities and uses of microcomputers and associated programs and applicable software packages
- Skill in planning, organizing, supervising and monitoring emergency communications center operations.
- Skill in providing effective leadership to training and operational staff.
- Skill in effective oral and written communications and interpersonal communications.
- Skill in employee relations and motivating staff in identify changes needed to improve the working environment and operations, and to effect these changes.
- Ability to plan, organize and direct the operations of a communications center and assists with the planning of the overall department.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interact with and maintain effective working relationships with other departments, internal and external, other employees and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain high work standards and staff commitment to achieve those standards in accordance with the County’s ‘We Care’ principles.
- Ability to create, analyze, interpret and report findings along with recommendations.
- Ability to lift up to 10lbs occasionally or sitting most of the time.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid drivers license required.
Other Qualifications
Supervision of Communications Operations including director supervision of Telecommunicator Shift Supervisors
Conduct performance appraisals, interview prospective applicants for vacancies and promotions; issue discipline and mentor, coach and train subordinates; oversee the scheduling of personnel
Oversee the departments training program including updating and maintaining the Communications Training Manual and directing a training program utilizing FTOs
Ensure departmental policies are adhered to an assist with the implementation of departmental policies and standard operating guidelines.
Coordinate with other jurisdictional and agency communication centers to ensure seamless and efficient public safety response.
Respond to technical and operational issues that hinder the department’s ability to dispatch emergency response and work with the Director to ensure issues are resolved.
May assume responsibility of all operations in the absence of the Director
Performs related duties as required.
- Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
