Position Overview

College Achieve Public Schools is seeking a visionary and collaborative Mathematics Department Chairperson (Grades 9–12) to lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of the school’s secondary mathematics curriculum. The ideal candidate will combine a deep understanding of instructional best practices with leadership skills that foster academic excellence, professional growth, and curriculum innovation. This is a 12-month leadership role that includes teaching responsibilities and direct supervision of instructional staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaboratively lead the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the 9–12 math curriculum aligned with NJ Student Learning Standards.
   

• Oversee timely revisions of district math curriculum and support integration of technology and instructional materials
   

• Support and coach teachers in the use of data to drive instruction and improve student outcomes through diagnostic screening and progress monitoring
   

• Lead the analysis and review of school-wide math assessment data and help implement targeted instructional strategies for improvement

• Teach a minimum of one and no more than three classes within the math department to stay grounded in practice and model effective instruction.
   

• Provide coaching, supervision, and evaluation of instructional and support staff in alignment with AchieveNJ guidelines.
   

• Design and lead professional learning that aligns with network priorities and supports teacher growth and instructional improvement.
   

• Create, curate, and share grade-level resources to support planning, content delivery, and consistent instructional routines.
   

• Schedule, plan and facilitate regular grade-level and department meetings to promote instructional alignment, collaboration, and best practices.
   

• Foster leadership within the team by recognizing teacher strengths and providing opportunities to lead PD, PLCs, or initiatives.
   

• Collaborate with school-based and district administrators, as well as content specialists, to ensure horizontal and vertical curriculum articulation
   

• Make informed recommendations for new course offerings, student placement, and instructional programming based on data and team input.
   

• Represent the department in school and community presentations, board meetings, and family engagement sessions
   

• Partner with the Network Director of Mathematics to ensure curriculum pacing, content delivery, and instructional practices are aligned across all CAPS campuses.
   

• Lead or co-lead network-wide professional development sessions on designated staff PD days, supporting consistent implementation of math initiatives and sharing best practices across schools.
   

• Support the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of instructional staff in collaboration with school leadership
   

• Assist with the planning and oversight of budget items related to math programming and staffing
   

• Recommend teacher attendance at relevant professional conferences and content-based workshops
   

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee

Required Qualifications

• Valid New Jersey Supervisor, Principal, School Administrator Certificate, or Certificate of Eligibility
   

• Strong knowledge of current NJ curriculum standards, instructional design, and effective teaching practices
   

• Proven leadership in curriculum development, program evaluation, and instructional coaching
   

• Experience in urban school environments and a strong commitment to educational equity
   

• Ability to plan, coordinate, and facilitate school- or network-wide professional development initiatives
   

• Must pass a criminal history background check and provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal work authorization
   

• Valid New Jersey driver’s license
   

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual salary range: $90,000–$130,000, commensurate with experience
   

• 10-month position with leadership responsibilities and teaching component

Evaluation
