Los Angeles Superior Court Supervising Research Attorneys are prohibited by Court policy from practicing law during their employment. This includes prohibition from receiving fees and appearing in any court on behalf of another person, except if performing non-representational pro bono work that conforms to the Court’s Pro Bono Policy and is pre-approved by management. Other outside employment must be approved in advance.

Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and Evaluate Staff Performance – Oversee the daily work and performance of assigned Research Attorneys and Law Clerks, providing regular feedback, coaching, and corrective action as needed to ensure consistent and competent performance.
- Provide Legal Guidance and Conduct Research – Interpret and apply legal principles across various areas of law; conduct in-depth legal research; draft memoranda, tentative rulings, and legal correspondence in support of judicial officers and Court management as needed.
- Coordinate Training and Professional Development – Plan, deliver, and monitor training programs to ensure unit members meet mandated education requirements and develop the skills necessary for effective job performance.
- Develop and Implement Policies and Procedures – Analyze legislation, recommend changes to court operations, and assist in developing procedures that ensure compliance with legal and administrative requirements.
- Manage Workflow and Staffing Assignments – Coordinate coverage and assign work across multiple courtrooms; collaborate with judges and other supervising attorneys to ensure efficient case handling and operational continuity.
This position may be eligible for full or partial telework following an initial training period and contingent upon the needs of the Court.

Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio (e.g., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience). Overtime does not count toward additional credit.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Extensive knowledge of California Civil, Criminal, Family, Juvenile, and Probate law, California law and motion practice, pleading requirements, the California Rules of Court, and Los Angeles Superior Court Local Rules
- Keen legal judgment
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong work ethic, and demonstrated professionalism
- Ability to foster a positive work environment and to coach performance effectively
- Demonstrated ability to work with persons from diverse backgrounds and varied work styles
- Ability to prioritize and manage concurrent projects with competing deadlines effectively
- Highly adaptable and open to new ideas
- Discretion, sound judgment, and an abiding commitment to fairness
- Experience developing and presenting professional training materials
