Job Summary:
The Utilities Tech II is responsible for performing general, emergency, and preventive maintenance, as well as construction and repair of City water and wastewater lines. This role also involves operating heavy machinery and providing assistance with community events and disaster preparedness efforts.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three years of experience in utility maintenance.
- A valid Texas driver’s license.
- Preferred Requirements:
- A valid Class B commercial driver’s license.
- Class C Water License or must obtain within 12 months of employment, OR
- Collection II Wastewater License or must obtain within 12 months of employment
Essential Job Functions:
- Assignment included scheduled on-call rotation.
- Complete assignment in any combination of the following tasks: water distribution, water line maintenance, wastewater collection, and/or sewer line maintenance.
- Perform preventive and routine maintenance and quality control checks of City infrastructure, property equipment and vehicles.
- Perform accurate meter readings, inspect for unauthorized connections and damage, conduct routine maintenance and repairs, and service automated systems to ensure proper meter functionality.
- Will operate power tool operation and be responsible for material handling as well as proper recording of all work orders and general support at work sites.
- Collaborates and assist with other City Departments with City events, natural disasters and/or state of emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Practices and techniques of performing field inspections related to areas of assignment.
- City geography including street locations.
- Department safety rules and procedures.
Skills in:
- Operating construction and excavation equipment.
- Working under stress and using good judgment in emergency situations.
- Tactfully responding to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Establishing effective working relationships with employees.
- Following written and oral instructions.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 50 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Ability to work in confined spaces and trenches. Constant use of protective personnel equipment including but not limited to footwear, eyewear, and use of reflective clothing is required. Will work on-call rotation and in an emergency event.
