About the Department

Under general supervision, provides staff support for Environmental Health Department personnel.

Shift:  Mon – Fri, 8a – 5p, and additional hours as job requires


Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills.  This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs reception duties; greets customers; directs them to the appropriate department, or office of staff member.
  • Answers phones; directs calls to appropriate staff; takes messages.
  • Receives and enters complaints related to on-site sewage, food establishments and public nuisances.
  • Receives and processes open records requests.
  • Enters or updates maintenance reports submitted by on-site sewage facility maintenance providers.
  • Processes and distributes incoming mail. 
  • Utilizes various automated records systems and programs.
  • Maintains various filing systems and logs.
  • Updates permits and data systems as needed.
  • Performs notary services as requested.   
  • Provides backup in processing invoices for payment.
  • Provides backup in ordering supplies and equipment. 
  • Provides backup support to other staff support personnel.  


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:

High School Diploma or equivalent; AND three months related experience and/or training; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources or Department Director.  


Knowledge of:

  • County government operations.
  • Office procedures and systems.
  • Office equipment. 
  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.


Skill in:

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies and organizations, business owners, real estate agencies, contractors, vendors and the general public. 
  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules.
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Performing effectively under stressful working conditions.
  • Performing basic mathematical calculations.
  • Providing effective customer service.
  • Multi-tasking.
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.
  • Bilingual capabilities preferred, not required.


LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Texas Driver's License.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a traditional office work environment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office setting. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
