About the Department
This position supports the mission of Alamance Community College to provide inclusive and equitable educational programs that empower all members of our diverse community to succeed. This is a split full time position with 50% instructional duties and 50% coordination of a peer mentoring program.
As the Coordinator of the peer mentoring program, this role will support the Access to Achievement Initiative by promoting student success academically and socially. This position includes developing mentoring program, materials, providing orientation training, outreach, recruitment, and oversight of peer mentors and mentees.
As an Instructor, this position will teach academic and career readiness course(s) with a focus on pre-employability skills and academic support, serving adult learners with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and/or learning differences. This role includes designing and delivering engaging, accessible learning experiences that prepare students for increased independence, professional success, and active participation in campus and community life.
This position requires flexibility and commitment to satisfy both essential roles.
Position Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Development:
- Train and supervise peer mentors, equipping them with the skills to support students with IDD in academic and social activities.
- Evaluate participants of the program, providing ongoing feedback and support to both mentors and mentees.
- Work with the Student Government Association (SGA) to co-plan inclusive events and support student involvement in campus life.
Instruction:
- Teach courses in College and Career Readiness aligned with NC Adult Content Standards and WIOA Title II (AEFL) guidelines, tailoring instruction to meet the needs of students with IDD.
- Deliver workforce pathway programs that support students with or without disabilities in preparing for career exploration and advancement.
- Provide instruction to increase students’ digital literacy skills and their ability to navigate workforce and community environments successfully.
- Develop lesson plans that incorporate effective teaching strategies, accommodations, and the use of assistive technologies or adaptive equipment to support diverse learners.
Student Support and Data Management:
- Monitor and assess student progress, maintaining accurate records and outcomes using designated tools.
- Build strong relationships with students, families, and community partners to ensure holistic support for learners.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with the Access to Achievement Advisor
- Perform other duties as assigned to enhance program success and fulfill the College’s mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Adult Education, or a related field
- Experience teaching or working with adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, preferably in an educational or workforce training setting.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain detailed records and analyze data.
- Computer skills including knowledge of internet software, Learning Management Systems, online learning platforms, spreadsheet software, word processing software, and effective email communication.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment that promotes student success.
- Certification or specialized training in special education, adult education, or disability services.
- Knowledge of effective instructional strategies, accommodations, and assistive technologies for individuals with IDD.
- Experience with workforce development programs, digital literacy instruction, or career readiness initiatives.
- Knowledge of NC Adult Content Standards and WIOA Title II (AEFL) guidelines.
- Familiarity with peer mentoring models and strategies to promote social inclusion.
