Department & Position Information:
The Instructor will be responsible for providing students with a complete syllabus containing course objectives; presenting enthusiastic, well prepared, organized, and clear lectures and classroom activities consistent with the course syllabus; continually promoting the development and effective use of skills in areas such as critical and analytical thinking, evaluation, communication, computation, problem solving, and decision-making; providing the student with timely information and feedback on their academic progress relative to quizzes, tests, homework, and projects; maintaining accurate, up-to-date records of student academic performance; and possessing a thorough knowledge and understanding of all college policies. 

The biology department offers a rigorous sequence of courses for students interested in professional/technical degrees, and for science and non-science majors. These include molecular and cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology.?

The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for teaching courses in Biology. Primary emphasis will be on Anatomy and Physiology, with the possibility of teaching other majors and non-major courses. There may also be opportunities to teach in learning communities and interdisciplinary studies courses. A portion of the teaching assignment may be in the evening. ?In addition to teaching, this position involves advising students, developing programs and curricula and participating in college governance, department/division and campus-related professional activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide and support classroom instruction for the Biology Department.
  • Meet with students, staff members and other educators to discuss students' instructional programs and other issues.
  • Stay current in subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
  • Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives.
  • Track the academic status of Biology Department students to ensure good academic standards are maintained and appropriate action is taken to refer students to necessary remediation or support services.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom and lab environment conducive to effective learning with the limits of the resources provided.

Position Duties

Required Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in biology, or related discipline, from an accredited college or university
  • Experience teaching in a higher education environment
  • Laboratory or research experience in Biology or related areas 
Knowledge Of:
  • Current applicable trends, developments, and research
  • Microsoft Office applications, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technology (ex. ctcLink, Canvas, Starfish, etc.)
  • Biology at a wide range of levels
Skill In:
  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of Biology
  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Using principles of assessment to improve quality of instruction and service to students
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Ensuring a safe environment in a biology laboratory
  • Advising students academically
  • Working productively and collaboratively with others in committee settings
  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities
  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Minimum Qualifications

Term Of Employment/Salary:

  • Pro-Rata (66.67% of load) non-tenure track academic position 
  • 172-day annual contract beginning September 18, 2025
  • Salary placement determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with education
  • Per the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, current Shoreline College faculty have priority consideration for this position
Physical Work Environment:  
The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option of some assignments to be completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office/lab space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers, media equipment, and field-specific equipment in the work environment.
