KEY FUNCTION:
Assess, plan, treat, and provide education and specialized care to the oncology outpatient service through the Supportive Care department of the Shirley and Jim Fielding North East Cancer Centre (NECC).

 

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Supportive Care/Patient Education and Psychosocial Oncology Lead.

 

DUTIES:
1. Perform detailed, comprehensive medical history and physical assessments of patients to establish a clinical impression for physiotherapy intervention as required.
2. Initiate and execute all physiotherapy treatments related to the clinical impression to deliver patient care within various clinical areas, and perform on-going evaluations to determine when discharge from service is appropriate.
3. Document assessment in the patient’s medical chart, clinical impression, and all related physiotherapy intervention and patient outcomes; maintain an accepted standard of documentation for quality assurance as outlined by HSN policies and the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario (CPO).
4. Communicate verbally or through written reports with other health care professionals regarding patient management for clinical problem-solving and program development.
5. Act as a professional resource for internal health care providers and community partners.
6. Provide facilitation of patient education classes and review materials as required.
7. Utilize patient reported outcomes, including the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) for patient symptom management.
8. Create and revise policies and procedures pertaining to Physiotherapy.
9. Order supplies as required.
10. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
11. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
12. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
13. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
14. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
15. Perform other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the CPO.
2. Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required.
3. Certification as an Assistive Devices Program (ADP) authorizer in Pressure Modification Devices and Mobility Devices is required.
4. Certification in Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for Lymphedema is required.
5. Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) is preferred.
6. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

 

EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of five (5) years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with an oncology patient population.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
2. Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
3. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
4. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
5. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
6. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
7. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
8. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
