About the Department

To establish a list of eligible candidates for current and future part-time vacancies, valid for up to one year. Immediate openings include two 10-month, part-time positions at Simi Institute for Careers & Education in Simi Valley, California: Monday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

TESTING PROCESS: 
A) Multiple Choice Test = 40% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 2, 2025
B) Structured Interview = 60% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 8, 2025

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job posting by the application deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the multiple choice test. Those with the highest scores on the multiple choice test will be invited to the structured interview. The testing process is subject to change as needs dictate. Summary
Provides assistance in any or all of the following areas: clerical, technical, instructional. Assist students either in an office or computer testing center.  Assembles and sets up equipment, supplies, and work stations used to register and test students for placement into the English as a Second Language program and/or for providing support to an instructor in a lab setting.  Tasks performed require technical competence with computer-based programs that track student attendance and progress. Detailed data entry is required for the maintenance of critical information necessary for essential record keeping.
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Adult Education Instructional Assistant (ESL) will demonstrate the ability to assist non-English speaking students with the registration, orientation and testing process in order for the student to be successful in the adult education classroom/lab. The focus is toward working with students in a lab or other environment where the emphasis is classroom assistance, setting up learning stations, issuing materials and tools; and/or in providing related clerical support in obtaining correct demographic and goal-related information and preparing computerized testing sessions required for program accountability and grant-based funding; and/or for providing related clerical support.

Position Duties

  • Orients students in the use of computers, including computer basics and access of educational software packages/applications. 
  • Enrolls and orients students to the program, providing materials and technical assistance, and assisting with learning exercises.  Instructs students in laboratory procedures, and the purposes and uses of materials, including computer-aided instructional applications.
  • Answers inquiries and provides information concerning standards, procedures and programs.  Relays accurate information to students and teachers.
  • Performs regular and recurring clerical functions related to the program.  Ensures that students sign into the classroom and/or laboratory.  Prepares orientation, and pre- and post-testing schedules for all classes.   Maintains files of attendance, answer keys, answer sheets, laboratory instructions, modules, charts, and signs.  Records attendance.
  • Provides students with assistance in completing registration forms. Verifies all information on forms for accuracy and legibility.
  • Completes proctor certification. Complies with all test administration and security practices.
  • Facilitates students in computer-based testing to increase English language skills.
  • Maintains student records, prepares promotion lists, and promotion certificates.
  • Reinforces and reintroduces information and materials presented in class and introduces alternative or expanded information not presented in class to enhance student understanding and progress.  
  • Assesses students' current knowledge, understanding, and experience to determine appropriate ESL class levels that will inspire comprehension of the subject matter.  
  • May use techniques such as, but not limited to analogies and examples of concepts related to current materials and/or life situations.
  • Instructs students in the procedures, purpose, and use of instructional support materials, including programmed instruction, reading machines, calculators, and laboratory libraries. 
  • Reviews tests with students, determines which concepts were misunderstood, and suggests additional work to help enhance understanding of course content.  May advise students on techniques for alleviating test anxiety. 
  • Assesses and/or grades homework and adjust assignments for students to enhance learning. Maintains records of student progress and problems.
  • Serves as a liaison between the student and instructors and tutors.  Keeps instructors apprised of student progress.  May assign a student tutor whose skills match the needs of the student.
  • Reads and maintains up-to-date familiarity with materials used in multiple subjects. Knowledge of all ESL/ABE classes and class schedules.
  • May proctor tests in the absence of the instructor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience

Requires graduation from high school or equivalent, and one year of clerical experience utilizing computer applications or providing instructional support to students.

*Completion of 48 semester units at an institution of higher education, or an associate’s (or higher) degree highly desirable.  Incumbents hired into this classification, and who have completed (and provided proof) of this level of education will be assigned as an Adult Education Instructional Assistant at salary range 60.
