The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. SCOPE OF DUTIES
The Administrative Assistant is supervised by the principal and is responsible for assisting in the organization and operation of the policies, procedures, and practices of the Education Department, and assisting with overall office operations.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Communicates with families, districts, school staff and students with professionalism.
- Develops and maintains a working relationship with other school departments and is sensitive to current school-wide issues and trends.
- Assist with coverage of front office as needed.
- Process P.O.’s for the education team.
- Processes leave requests for the principal.
- Order and maintain office supplies as assigned.
- Assist with PBIS celebrations under the direction of the principal.
- Assist with contacting teacher substitutes for classroom coverage.
- Willingness to assist with late student arrival including entering into “PickMyKid”.
- Responsible for a variety of annual and on-going tasks, such as:
- Keeps records of professional development and special signature-related forms from staff.
- Schedule appointments and maintain calendar for the principal.
- Assists in updating and maintaining manuals and handbooks for school, extended school year and students.
- Collects information and generates quarterly reports (i.e. IEP progress marks) and sends to families and districts.
- Undertakes special projects as needed.
- Assist with the coordination of ESY campus programs.
- Special Events Planning – help coordinate and process set ups for a variety of special events and meetings (i.e. Homecoming, Founder’s Day, Graduation).
- Compiles various reports and information to be kept up-to-date.
- Performs computer-related tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma, supplemented by a minimum of two years of secretarial experience.
- Additional education or secretarial experience will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Sign language proficiency or a willingness to learn.
- Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Power Point, and Excel) and Google platform required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
- Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request.

- $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service.
