The Town of Vienna’s Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Urban Forestry Crew Team Member to support the year-round care, maintenance, and establishment of trees throughout the Town, primarily within public rights-of-way. The ideal candidate will assist with watering trees, performing root collar excavations, monitoring tree health, and supporting a variety of tree care practices. This is a hands-on, outdoor position that plays a key role in the Town’s commitment to a thriving urban forest.  Work Schedule: This part-time position is regularly scheduled to work for 20 to 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Some seasonal variation in workload is expected, with watering tasks being the primary focus during the growing season. Evening or weekend work may be scheduled periodically, but not regularly. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
 Tree Watering (Primary Task During Growing Season):

• Watering street trees using a watering truck throughout the establishment period
• Installing and removing watering devices (e.g., tree gator bags) at the beginning and end of the season
• Monitoring watering devices for damage and replacing when needed
• Recording daily logs
• Observing and reporting visible tree health concerns to the Town Arborist

• Using hand tools to remove excess soil and mulch from the base of trees
• Operating an air compressor and air spade to expose root collars
• Pruning and removing girdling roots or compacted surface roots
• Regrading and properly mulching around tree bases

• Adjusting watering devices (e.g., tree diapers) and correcting improper mulching
• Updating digital tree inventory
• Assisting with tree planting site prep and tree installations
• Expanding tree rings to protect surface roots
• Surveying and logging tree health concerns
• Installing and maintaining deer protection devices
• Removing competing vegetation and cutting harmful vines

• Assist Urban Forestry, Horticulture and Park Maintenance crews with their assignments
• Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required
• Prior experience or education in horticulture, arboriculture, landscaping, or related field preferred
• Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Comfortable using hand tools, small machinery, and operating a watering truck (training provided)
• Strong attention to detail, recordkeeping, and communication skills
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record required
