Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Normal clinic hours- Monday-Friday 7:00-5:00. Includes 4 pediatric clinic days and 3 adult clinic days at various sites
Sign on bonus based on FTE
Major Responsibilities:- Performs pediatric echocardiographic studies on patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, using multiple echocardiography systems and accessories appropriate to the patient's specific diagnosis, age, height, and weight.
- Reviews patient chart to obtain pertinent clinical history and prior test evaluations based on suspected congenital heart defect.
- Performs echocardiograms, recognizing a variety of different types of cardiac defects and tailors the exam based on the type of defect and clinical signs and symptoms present.
- Differentiates artifacts from appropriate images, recognizing the limitations of the equipment and utilizing knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Operates ultrasound equipment utilizing a variety of techniques, including M-mode, two-and three-dimensional, pulsed Doppler, myocardial, and continuous wave Doppler flow mapping.
- Performs complex pediatric cardiac ultrasound examinations and uses the most appropriate imaging for the situation. Deviates from normal techniques often to tailor the exam to evaluate the type of congenital heart defect present and/or repair that has been performed.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), and
- Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo issued by the ARDMS, and
- Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-PE) registration with Pediatric Echocardiography issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Education Required:
- Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in Sonography.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 2 years of experience in a lab performing pediatric echocardiography testing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Able to perform pediatric echocardiography studies including complex studies: stress echocardiography, dobutamine echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography examinations.
- Advanced knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and congenital defects.
- Demonstrates knowledge of repair and treatment options for congenital heart defects and be able to appropriately tailor the exam to evaluate each type of treatment/repair.
- Ability to recognize and record cardiac pathology in order for the physician to render a diagnosis.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain composure under stress, using tact and good judgment.
- Analytical decision making skills necessary to quickly assess and resolve technical, and patient care problems and issues.
- Ability to travel to various outreach locations to support the onsite pediatric imaging practice
- Ability to assist as needed as a clinical instructor for the Aurora School of Ultrasound, and participates in the instruction of fellows, residents, and visiting physicians.

- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Able to sit 50% and stand and walk 20% of the workday.
- Must be able to:
- Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
- Lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
- Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
- Must be able to:
- Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
- Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
- Able to frequently push or pull over 100 lbs.
- Must have clear speech, vision and hearing.
