Job Description:
The school nurse may be assigned to any pre-K through 12th grade school within the Lansing School District.
The school nurse provides professional nursing service to a variety of general education and special education students.
School Nurses provide routine health care, case management, and emergency care within the school setting.
The nurse will develop emergency care plans for students with acute and chronic health conditions, develop medical care plans for students with chronic health conditions, and assist students and families with access to school and community resources to improve health and remove barriers to school attendance and performance. The nurse may provide coordination of communicable disease in schools including health department reporting, case management, and prevention services.
The school nurse will provide staff training, coordinate the school Medical Response Team, oversee the AED program, and provide annual training for medication administration, emergency medication administration, and a wide variety of health and wellness activities as assigned.
School Nurses may participate in IEP team meetings, the development of behavior management plans, and other student plans to improve student success.
The school nurse will function within the Nurse team to provide a wide range of health promotion, disease prevention, and coordination of care for all students within their assigned school(s).
Position Responsibilities:
Develop medical and emergency care plans for students with chronic illness
Serve as liaison between home, school, and health care providers
Assist students and families with access to resources to improve attendance and well-being
Connect with students with high absenteeism to remove barriers to attendance
Provide coordination of communicable diseases in school, including health department reporting, case management, and prevention
Provide classroom instruction re: health and wellness, prevention and health promotion strategies
Monitor administration of daily and emergency medication at school
Monitor and ensure compliance with district medication policies
Oversee the distribution, maintenance, and staff training for emergency medications
Provide staff training for a wide variety of medical conditions and needs
Provide training for Medical Emergency Response Teams in each school
Ensure compliance with state-mandated immunization requirements including monitoring, referrals, follow-up, and hosting immunization clinics
Coordinate care for children identified through the state-mandated vision, hearing, and dental screenings
Monitoring AED function and staff training regarding use and function
Provide hands-on skilled Nursing assessment and care for routine illness, accident, and injury Assist families with obtaining primary care for their children in the community
Direct oversight for medical assistants assigned to their schools
Participate in IEP's and student planning at assigned schools
Participate in the development of student behavior plans to improve access to the curriculum
Make district-wide referrals for various needs and services (FORT, behavioral support, etc.)
All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Must have a valid Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse
Bachelor’s degree required
Must have a current interim, standard, or professional school nurse certificate issued by the State Board of Education or be immediately eligible for one of the three categories of certification
Must have a minimum of 2 years of professional nursing experience in school nursing, pediatric nursing or a related field
