In partnership with Student Financial Services, Madison House serves as the student volunteer center at the University of Virginia and coordinates community partners, student leaders, and volunteers to address the needs of the community as well as the educational and personal growth objectives of
students. This is a Hybrid position.
Federal Work Study is required to apply for this position.
Position Description The Graduate Fellows program at Madison House is designed to give graduate students hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of a non-profit organization that serves both University students and local community partners.
The CASH (Creating Assets, Savings, & Hope) program serves as the volunteer recruitment arm of the Charlottesville area VITA program. Student volunteers greet eligible community members, prepare tax returns, and perform quality review on returns prepared by other volunteers. Student leaders recruit volunteers, support training efforts, and act as site coordinators. Past sites include University Baptist Church, Thomas Jefferson Area Planning District, and Dairy Market.
The Training Fellow would be primarily responsible for ensuring quality delivery of federal training in the fall, and supporting site needs during tax season.
Responsibilities / Expectations / Outcomes
The Tax Aid Training Fellow will:
- Meet regularly with a team of student leaders who coordinate tax sites and their volunteers.
- Prepare student trainers to incorporate best practices pedagogy and existing materials (VACAP etc) for federal training and exam.
- With the Director of the Tax Assistance Program, visit training sessions to ensure quality delivery of training.
- Visit tax sites to assist in season opening, ensure preparedness, and facilitate quality delivery of services.
- Assist in data collection, analysis, and record keeping.
- Provide general support for the VITA program
Fellows will gain experience in an educational setting, implementing an existing curriculum. Training and certification for the VITA program is provided. Madison House highly values learning and an individual's professional and personal development.
An excellent candidate seeks executing a curriculum and overseeing volunteer performance. They will have the ability to work closely with both professional staff and other graduate workers, and have a passion for financial literacy. Former tax preparation knowledge is not required; training is provided.
Required Qualifications
- Registration as a graduate student at University of Virginia
- Enthusiasm for Madison House’s mission of ethical community engagement and service learning
- Desire to work closely with undergraduate student service leaders
- Confidence in managing their own time across a wide variety of long-term projects and weekly tasks
- Tolerance for ambiguity
- Willingness to take initiative and risks in a supportive environment
- Ability to commit to approximately 15 hours a week
- Reliable transportation (to access tax sites, especially during tax season)
- Familiarity or willingness to learn: Excel, Google Suite, GivePulse, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparation software
Compensation and Appointment This position is a nine-month appointment (August through April) for the 2025-2026 academic year.
