Job Description:
The Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking a qualified Scientific Glassblower to design, fabricate, modify, and repair scientific glass apparatus. This position also oversees daily operations of the glass shop, including safety, financial management, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
Consult with faculty, staff, and students to design and interpret complex glassware schematics and technical diagrams.
Create, fabricate, modify, and repair scientific glassware and instruments to support research and teaching needs.
Prepare cost estimates and client billing in coordination with departmental financial personnel.
Collaborate to set and update service rates and promote the glass shop's capabilities through internal and external outreach.
Maintain a safe and efficient work environment by managing equipment, inventory, and compliance with safety standards.
Serve as the primary point of contact for glass shop operations and may supervise staff or guide student workers as needed.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in scientific glassblowing, including designing and repairing complex glass instruments. They will have strong organizational and communication skills and will have the ability to work independently and collaborate with researchers on custom projects.
