Job Summary

The student intern in Oral Medicine Research Laboratory will provide an introduction to contemporary biomedical bench and computational research for biomarker discovery for oral and systemic diseases. The individual will use molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology investigation methodologies in bench research. The individual will apply computational biology in all “omics” related sciences such as microbiomic, human genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics. Responsibilities will include all aspects of research from protocol and experimental design, study implementation in the laboratory, data analysis and interpretation, abstract and manuscript preparation, and presentation at lab meetings. All work will be conducted as defined by the directors of the laboratory or designees.


Essential Functions

  • Performs duties as assigned by leadership that will enhance the intern's college study.
  • Works as a member of the departmental team to develop and implement customer support services to assist patients, families, and guests.
  • Provides administrative coverage.
  • Types documents, creates spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Assists with research projects, data analysis, and/or creating various reports.
  • Assist in implementing basic science and clinical translational research projects related to areas of focus. Work might involve collection, handling, processing, and analysis of human and bacterial specimens as well as bioinformatics.
  • Organize work according to priority of the experimental studies and assessment of the time necessary to complete procedures/ data analysis. Keep careful and accurate records.
  • Generate data necessary for creation of abstracts and papers. Present summaries of results at meetings of the lab group.
  •  Maintain confidentiality of all laboratory information and experimental results
  • Assists with TJC education preparation as required.

Physical Requirements

Requires walking, sitting, lifting and reaching overhead. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds at shoulder height. Must be able to push patients in wheelchairs or supplies on a rolling cart. Intact sense of sight and hearing is required. Responsible for working in a safe manner.



Education, Experience and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Currently enrolled or at least one-year experience in a college/university as an undergraduate or graduate student in Healthcare, Hospitality, Social Sciences, Business Administration or Healthcare Administration required; concentration in Healthcare preferred. Planning, prioritizing, oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving, team, and computer skills required.

Preferred:

Successful completion of undergraduate education as well as at least 1 year of a graduate program at an accredited institution. Post-baccalaureate bioinformatic students are encouraged to apply. Acceptance for the internship is contingent on academic excellence. Applicants will benefit from demonstrated prior interest in and commitment to research such as past research experience, abstract presentation, or publications in peer-reviewed journals. Organizational, time management, and planning capabilities needed. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, energetic, and to work effectively in a team environment.

Pay Range

$18.50 - $27.75
