REPORTS TO: Chief Department Engineer
SUPERVISES: May direct the work of Designer I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for reviewing for accuracy, efficiency and completeness of drawings performed by Designers I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons.
Works with CAD Integration Manager to set policies related to Design.
May evaluate designs for cost efficiency and reliability and ensure project completion.
Determines technical adequacy of drawings.
May perform the work of a Designer when not checking.
May be assigned task of leading the Design team in the absence of Manager.
Trains Designers I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons.
May provide input to evaluations of Designers I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons.
Complies with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
Thirteen (13) years of shipyard design and construction or equivalent experience required.
Thirteen (13) years of 3D modeling experience required.
A combination of 13 years of production floor experience and relative maritime design experience may considered in lieu of above two requirements.
Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Understanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlines
Experienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers required.
Possess expert Computer literacy and knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products required. ShipConstructor or other 3D modeling software experience preferred.
Possess a thorough understanding of vessel design, in any or all of the following areas: structure, HVAC, mechanical systems, wire ways or fit out required.
Working knowledge of modular construction methods preferred.
Experience in the construction of aluminum vessels preferred.
Working knowledge in design and construction of US Navy vessels preferred.
Associates or higher level degree preferred.

The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD clearance may be required if deemed
necessary in the scope of your position responsibilities.
18 years of age or older at time of application
Able to provide proof of US Person Status
No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
Willing to submit to a drug screen
Willing to submit to a background check
TOOLS:
• Computer – MS Office, AutoCAD 2006 or later, ShipConstructor 08
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
• Will check the work of Designers I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons
• Will determine technical adequacy of drawings
• Will work with CAD Integration Manager to set policies and train Designers I, II, III, IV and Draftspersons
DISCRETION EXERCISED: As assigned.
LIAISES WITH: Engineers, Designers, Drafters, Production Personnel, Customer, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers
