Dynamic opportunity for 2x Post-Doctoral Research Associates or Post-Doctoral Research Fellows to join the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use
Base Salary Level A $105,314 - $116,679 OR Level B $122,830 - $145,858 + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
At the Matilda Centre, we bring together world-leading researchers, clinicians, people with lived experience and community to share skills, synergise data, harness new technologies and trial innovative programs to prevent and treat mental and substance use disorders.
We are looking for either 2x Post-Doctoral Research Associates or Post-Doctoral Research Fellows to join the Matilda Centre and work across various projects related to the prevention of vaping.
The positions will involve the coordination of ongoing research trials to evaluate the OurFutures Vaping program among high school students, as well as contributing to the development and evaluation of new vaping prevention resources for priority populations, including young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and primary school students. You will also be involved in research translation activities, supporting the roll out of the programs to Australian schools via the not-for-profit organisation, the Our Futures Institute. Your key responsibilities as a Level A Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be to:
Conduct independent and collaborative research, contributing to discipline knowledge
develop and refine research skills under the guidance of senior academics
provide informal mentoring and support to students within the discipline
engage in administrative tasks and participate in faculty or school meetings
foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture that values collaboration and excellence
contribute to university and faculty strategic initiatives and other relevant projects.
Your key responsibilities as a Level B Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (in addition to the above) will be to:
Focus on publications, conference presentations, and securing research funding
develop and maintain a strong research profile, including peer-reviewed publications and engagement in translational research with industry, policy, or community impact
contribute to competitive research grant applications and ensure research excellence and quality
provide mentorship to early-career academics and supervise postgraduate research students or projects where appropriate
engage in academic service, including administrative tasks, faculty meetings, and promoting a positive and inclusive workplace culture
share expertise through industry collaboration, public forums, seminars, and strategic contributions to the university’s mission.

About you
For a Level A Post-Doctoral Research Associate
Completed or near completion of PhD (within 6 months) in Psychology, Psychiatry, Public Health, Social Sciences, Education or a relevant field
Demonstrated experience developing and evaluating public health interventions, with a focus on high school students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and/or primary school aged students desirable, but not essential
excellent planning, organisation, and stakeholder management skills
demonstrated research experience and engagement in scholarly activity in the fields of substance use prevention or treatment and/or mental health, with the ability to build and maintain academic, industry, and professional networks
demonstrated understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodology, and experience and skill in ethical approvals, data collection, management and analysis.
For a Level B Post-Doctoral Research Associate (in addition to the above)
Completed a PhD in Psychology, Psychiatry, Public Health, Social Sciences, Education or a relevant field
proven experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity in the fields of substance use prevention or treatment and/or mental health
developing independent research profile within the discipline or area of expertise
experience supervising and mentoring others, including junior research staff.
