About the Opportunity

What You’ll Do 

Under the general supervision of the Mechanical/Plumbing Manager, the Plumber is responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of plumbing systems to ensure their safe and efficient operation across campus facilities.

  • Perform installation, troubleshooting, and servicing of plumbing systems, including pumps, fixtures, expansion joints, hot water heaters, radiators, drainage systems, and non-potable water lines in compliance with plumbing and NFPA codes.
  • Maintain and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, water heaters, garbage disposals, dishwashers, backflow preventers, sewer ejectors, and sump pumps to ensure proper operation of water, air, gas, and waste distribution systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve plumbing issues, including leaks, ruptured lines, and clogged drains using appropriate tools and equipment, including powered drain machines.
  • Install and repair fire suppression system piping and sprinkler heads, as well as work in confined spaces such as manholes and ejector pits.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety regulations and maintain a working knowledge of fire protection systems, pumps, and sewer ejectors.
  • Work a regular schedule but be available for emergency repairs, overtime, or coverage as needed, including critical campus events and extreme weather conditions. Perform non-plumbing-related tasks as necessary to support plant operations.
  • The Plumber/Maintenance Mechanic is considered essential personnel. This is a condition of employment.

What We’re Looking For   

Licenses & Experience

  • Valid Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber’s license is required. A Master Plumber’s license and/or a Sprinkler Fitter’s license is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber, including plumbing maintenance, installation, and repair in commercial, institutional, or industrial settings. Oil burner servicing experience is a plus.
  • Must obtain a Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License within one (1) year of employment. 

Other Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED 
  • Valid US Driver's license and clean driving record 
  • Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints 
  • Must have working knowledge of computers and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (Archibus preferred) 
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills 
  • Must possess solid time management and organizational skills, work well under pressure, and juggle multiple tasks effectively prioritizing competing requirements 
  • Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students, and staff to deal with difficult people and/or stressful scenarios 
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the University's uniform policy
  • Must be physically able to meet all job requirements including lifting items over 50 lbs and the ability to bend, sit, squat, stand, crawl, walk, climb, push/pull, kneel, handle objects (manual dexterity), reach above shoulder level, and use fine finger movements
  • Must be able to work alone and climb multiple sets of stairs, work off ladders, staging, lifts, etc. 
  • Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped spaces, during inclement weather year-round
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background check and motor vehicle record check
