Job Summary:

This position is responsible for ensuring operational integrity and reliability of the campus’ HVAC and mechanical systems through cost-effective, routine inspections, testing, and maintenance. The HVAC Journeyman plays a vital role in maintaining indoor comfort and safety of campus occupants by performing timely repairs, diagnostics, and replacements on a wide range of equipment - including boilers, chillers, make up air units, heat pumps, air-conditioning systems, heating systems, furnaces, water heaters roof top units, pumps, motors, air handlers, and the campus wide building automated system and the related system components of each. Detailed records of all maintenance activities are maintained to ensure a comprehensive history of work performed on each system.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Preventative Maintenance of Mechanical Equipment

Perform routine maintenance on HVAC systems, including changing the filters, belts, checking the refrigerant levels and pressure, checking amperages on the electrical components, cleaning of the evaporative and condensing coils, clearing the drains on air-conditioning systems. For heating systems, clean heat exchangers, internal compartments, check safety relays and controls of the burner chamber, and ensure the proper firing sequence of the heaters.

Ventilation & Exhaust Fan Maintenance

Inspect and maintain rooftop ventilation and exhaust fans, ensuring their system components are functioning optimally. This includes but is not limited to inspecting the mechanical components, the repair or replacement of the belt systems, lubricating the motor and other moving parts, and verifying the electrical components such as digitally controlled economizers, actuators and dampers are functioning correctly with the corresponding BAS commands.

Air-Handler & Air-Moving Equipment Inspections

Performs inspections on the various air-moving air-handler equipment on the campus that provide fresh air into and out of the buildings. This may include but is not limited to VAV boxes, air dampers, re - heat coils pressure and CO2 sensors, recirculatory heat, chilled water systems and the operating components, performing repairs or replacements as necessary.

Pump System Maintenance

Inspect and maintain various pumps we have on the campus that supply hot and cold water to the buildings and to outdoor ice melt systems in sidewalks and steps. Perform disassembly and inspection, repairs, replacements, and realignments to ensure optimal pump performance.

Boiler Inspections & Maintenance

Conducts daily inspections and manual blowdowns of the boilers across campus, documenting any deficiencies.  Perform routine inspection checks of make-up water metered amounts, water treatment systems, boilers safety systems and reports deficiencies and other critical findings to their supervisor.   

Chiller Inspections & Deferred Maintenance Recommendations

Perform daily inspections of the chillers, logging deficiencies and reporting them to the HVAC supervisor. Suggest deferred maintenance projects for future consideration as well as budgetary suggestions for operations and maintenance expenses.  

Required Qualifications:

  • Highschool diploma or GED

  • Proven aptitude through 5+ years experience or HVAC trade school(s) attendance.

  • Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license, as off-campus travel will be necessary.  Driving record must meet Regis University insurance carrier requirements. 

  • Federal EPA certification or ability to gain certification within 6 months of hire date. 

  • Strong communication skills interfacing with customers, coworkers, other employees, contractors, visitors, and first responders. Must have demonstrated skills in problem solving, critical thinking, reading comprehension, judgment and decision making.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate of completion or associate’s degree from an accredited HVAC or similar trade school.

  • City and County of Denver HVAC journeyman license
