The starting salary is based upon the previous number of years of teaching experience. 

 

General Summary:

 

The Primary Montessori Teacher teaches a three-year age span in a multiage setting, including 3-6 year olds (preschool and kindergarten combined).  The Primary Montessori Teacher creates a flexible Montessori class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. He/she individualizes instruction and establishes effective rapport with pupils to foster development and growth in intrinsic motivation, skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for primary Montessori education, in accordance with each pupil’s ability and aligned with the Montessori philosophy. The Primary Montessori Teacher establishes good relationships with parents and other staff members.  The Primary Montessori Teacher reports to the building principal.

 

Teaching staff must ensure that:

  1. They are familiar with the Montessori philosophy and methodology.
  2. They attend the appropriate Montessori training to obtain Montessori certification for the level they are teaching.
  3. They are familiar with the Montessori sequence for each area.
  4. They have a strong understanding of child development.
  5. They demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to being a member of the staff team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches the Montessori sequence for each area and the district-approved curriculum as appropriate.
  2. Develops lesson plans and instructional material for a multiage setting and provides individualized and small group instruction for a majority of the school day.
  3. Differentiates lesson plans for developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  4. Communicates regularly with parents outside the normal classroom day by means of emails, newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, parent information nights, etc.
  5. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
  6. Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  7. Identifies pupil needs and develops strategies for individual interventions or education plans.
  8. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  9. Plans and coordinates the work of instructional assistants, parents, and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
  10. Creates and maintains a beautiful and organized environment for learning.
  11. Uses technology to facilitate the students’ research.
  12. Supervises classroom, students, instructional assistants and volunteers.
  13. Is willing to be a contributing member of the school’s Leadership Team.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and ZA/ZS (now ZL) (early childhood) endorsements required OR proof of acceptance into a planned program leading to ZL endorsement.
  2. Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate.
  3. Montessori Teacher credential/certification preferred OR willingness to take a 8 week training over the upcoming summer.
  4. Experience teaching in a multiage setting preferred.
  5. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  6. Demonstrate success in area of application.
