The Registered Nurse (Phone/Triage Nurse) is a key part of our care team, providing expert guidance and compassionate support to patients over the phone. In this role, you'll assess symptoms, coordinate care with providers, and help patients understand their next steps with confidence. You'll use your clinical judgment to implement provider orders, document accurately, and ensure every patient feels heard and cared for. This position is ideal for an RN who thrives in a collaborative, patient-centered environment and enjoys making a meaningful difference every day.

*This is a .80 FTE position (with consideration up to 1.0 FTE) at our Wausau facility.

 

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Promptly answer patient calls, assess needs, screen calls for physicians, and provide timely updates on acute or new patient concerns. Manage patient appointments, schedule changes, and physician waitlists effectively.
  • Communicate post-procedure diagnoses, treatment plans, medication updates, and other care instructions in alignment with physician guidance. Accurately document all patient interactions and follow-up plans.
  • Provide patient education, including care plans, medication instructions, pre- and post-procedure teaching, and preparation guidance.
  • Maintain thorough, accurate documentation in the electronic medical record for all nursing actions, patient observations, and treatment responses. Manage prescription orders with pharmacies, including refills and new requests.
  • Deliver direct patient care as needed such as administering intravenous therapy utilizing proper technique consistent with SGNA and practice policy and procedure and acting as on-call RN to assist with ERCPs.
  • Ensure readiness for procedures by preparing charts, orders, and H&P documentation. Take comprehensive medical histories for new patients, verify medication and medical history accuracy, track symptoms at follow-up visits, and support care quality reporting.
  • Serve as a role model for peers in patient care, professional conduct, and personal appearance.
  • Supervise or coordinate the delegation of patient care assignments to licensed and unlicensed personnel as needed.
  • Perform clerical duties, including copying, faxing, and handling patient forms, insurance information, and reports as required by the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
  • Licensure/Certification
    • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Wisconsin required.
    • BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred.
  • Experience
    • Minimum three-years of nursing experience preferred.
    • Previous gastroenterology experience preferred.

  • Knowledge
    • Advanced clinical knowledge of the GI system, pharmaceuticals, and GI related diagnostic testing (lab and radiology).
  • Skills
    • Possesses interpersonal, communication, and listening skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with patients, physicians, coworkers, and all levels of staff.
    • Advanced clinical nursing assessment and documentation skills.
    • Proficient computer skills working in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Practice Management software, Microsoft Word, and the Internet.
    • Demonstrates professionalism and respect in all forms of communication and correspondence.
    • Exhibits a high level of phone and customer/patient service skills and etiquette to provide excellent patient care.
  • Abilities
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of health information.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and cope with rapidly changing patient care needs.
    • Ability to document accurately and efficiently in an electronic medical record.
    • Ability to provide occasional on-call coverage on a rotational basis.
