Specialist Structural Engineer

Vanderlande’s Warehouse Solutions Engineering Department is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning of Material Handling Systems, Warehouse Automation and Parcel Sortation systems for our customers throughout North America. In this position, you will be working with an engineering project team in the development of an automated warehouse or parcel sortation system.  You will be responsible for ensuring the design meets the customer requirements, is coordinated with other trades to minimize conflicts during installation, can be installed with efficiency, and maintain excellent communication with the site team.

This role requires a balance of technical expertise and leadership skills, ensuring designs are structurally sound, cost-effective, and aligned with project goals. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, guiding junior engineers, coordinating with external stakeholders, and driving improvements in design processes. Success in this role requires technical proficiency, leadership, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Lead the structural design process for steel constructions such as platforms, header steel, grating, handrails, and stairs.  Includes interfaces with concrete foundation attachments.
  • Develop and review structural design models using Revit and other industry-standard software.
  • Perform and validate structural calculations using RISA and other analysis tools, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Provide technical oversight for project teams and external engineering consultants regarding steel construction.
  • Review and approve (but not PE stamp) structural drawings, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and ease of installation.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes and safety regulations (IBC, OSHA, AISC, ASCE 7, ACI 318).
  • Act as the primary structural engineering expert for large or complex projects, providing technical leadership to internal and external teams.
  • Coordinate with project engineering teams, architects, contractors, and jurisdictional authorities to mitigate conflicts and optimize system integration.
  • Assist with construction documentation, ensuring alignment with project specifications.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical training and professional development.
  • Attend and lead project meetings, including coordination and BIM meetings.
  • Provide budgetary estimates (ROMs) and steel tonnage calculations for project cost assessments.
  • Identify and drive process improvements to enhance efficiency, design quality, and overall project execution.
  • Support procurement processes by reviewing steel construction specifications and collaborating with project buyers.
  • Conduct site visits and internal inspections to verify compliance with design specifications and assist in resolving field issues found by third parties.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with Structural Emphasis (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum 12 to 15 years of experience in designing structures
  • PE License (Role won’t involve stamping responsibilities)
    • Minimum – Single state PE license
    • Preferred – Multiple state PE license
  • Minimum - Has experience working with an EOR (Engineer of Record)
    • Preferred - Has experience as an EOR (Engineer of Record)
  • Willing and able to travel up to 10%
  • Strong understanding of engineering mechanics and design fundamentals
  • Expert skills in RISA Structural Analysis software preferred
  • Knowledge of steelwork manufacturing, installation process and quality
  • Knowledge of costs related to design, fabrication, and installation of steel structures
  • Experienced in CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks) and
  • Experienced in structural design software (RISA, Staad.Pro, etc.)
  • Knowledge of scope management and project planning
  • Ability to work in an entrepreneurial organization where cooperating with others and being a team member is natural
  • Strong communicator, able to effectively understand and set expectations for deliverables
  • Able to handle time sensitive situations and quickly set the right priorities, while maintaining a firm grasp of the details 
  • Experience working on large-scale construction, industrial or warehouse automation projects.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and drive solutions under tight deadlines.

Schedule:

Ability to align schedule based on project needs - Monday to Friday, 8-5pm EST United States (preferred)
