We’re building the next UK-headquartered engineering powerhouse.
There is a gulf between the needs of mission-focused organisations and the development and delivery of the critical technology they rely on. The consequences of this are felt acutely by underserved frontline operators, demanding a new breed of engineering enterprise to bridge this divide.
Rowden exists to meet this need. We design and build systems, infrastructure, and applications to deliver mission advantage to those working to protect the security of the UK and its allies. Rowden is setting a new standard in government technology provision: hyper-efficient engineering, better customer relationships, and rapid assimilation of commercial technology.
We’re growing our team and looking for talented Systems Engineers to work for 6 months on exciting projects aiming to deliver real value to our key customers.
You’ll join a diverse team of engineers at Rowden. You’ll contribute to a hands-on engineering culture, sharing knowledge and lessons with the wider engineering team, and learn new things yourself along the way.
Key areas of responsibility
As a delivery-focused Systems Engineer at Rowden, you’ll work across several capability and technology areas to help define & deliver complex systems. In this role, you’ll be responsible for:
Providing systems engineering expertise across the project lifecycle; from requirements engineering, system design and architecture, to integration, verification and validation.
Supporting the planning, management and delivery of engineering work packages using appropriate tools (e.g. JIRA).
Translating user needs into technical guidance and specifications, adopting appropriate systems engineering methodologies.
Maintaining appropriate design documentation utilising systems engineering tools and methods.
Collaborating with product managers, project managers and the engineering team to help bring clarity from ambiguity and realise successful systems.
Above all, bringing your systems-thinking approach to complex problems. Here at Rowden, our systems engineers are likely to be found doing both traditional systems engineering activities, but also getting hands-on to support the wider technical teams with development, procurement and test activities.
Key skills, experience and behaviours
We are looking for someone who is passionate about technology and actively invests in their technical skills and abilities. You will be constantly learning and developing in this role, but we are particularly looking for people with skills and experience in the following areas:
Experience in a range of requirements elicitation techniques that facilitate understanding and interpreting user needs and CONOPS for systems.
A thorough understanding of systems lifecycles, how to implement them for different problem domains and demonstrated experience in their application in delivery-focused teams
Experience in the design of systems and all engineering activities from conception through to deployment.
Experience in implementing engineering approaches, and knowing when not to! Understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of these approaches.
Experience conducting trade-off analysis for design or equipment selections, justifying rationale to a range of internal and external stakeholders.
The ability to critically review technical documentation and summarise key engineering risks and decisions, because of this review.
The knowledge and experience to ensure work meets contractual, safety and environmental obligations, with an understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations.
Excellent storytelling, both in writing and through presentation skills. Working with a variety of customers, being able to tailor the story to the audience is key.
The ability to work autonomously and proactively, dealing with multiple issues, tasks and priorities concurrently.
Escalation via solutions – we’re looking for people who push not just problems upwards, but those who make best efforts to offer solution options to senior decision makers.
Hands-on, optimistic in approach and naturally inquisitive, with a broad interest in technology.
Highly Desirable Skills and Experience:
Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant STEM subject.
Knowledge of Government engineering and procurement.
Knowledge of Agile development lifecycles and model-based systems engineering approaches.
Working knowledge of the following: o SysML, Enterprise Architect o Tactical networked C4I systems o Autonomous Platforms, Cloud platforms, Machine Learning, Safety & Security assurance.
