The Senior EHS Officer is responsible for administering Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs for one or more sites including Murrieta and Tustin, CA. The main location is Murrieta, CA. This role is responsible for all hazardous/non-hazardous waste control, radioactive waste, chemical inventories, PPE assessments, and JSAs. They must follow all safety precautions, rules and policies while performing job functions. Collaborates with multiple functions of the business including maintenance, department managers, and HR to address EHS incidents, observations, develop root cause analysis, as well as implement solutions to prevent/eliminate hazards.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Hazard Recognition and Control: identify and work to control conditions or actions that may cause injury, illness or property damage. Through inspections/audits, assess environmental, safety and health risks associated with equipment, materials, processes, facilities, or abilities.
  • Ergonomics: improve workplace ergonomics to allow employees to maximize their comfort, safety, and productivity. 
  • Hazardous Materials Management and Environmental Protection: ensure that chemicals, solvents, and other products are procured, stored, used, and disposed of in ways that prevent fires, unnecessary exposure, or harm to employees and the environment from these substances.
  • Serve as the site Radiation Safety Officer. 
  • Conduct accident and incident investigations as necessary.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources in the management of all workers’ compensation claims.
  • Emergency Response: organize, train and coordinate response efforts to emergencies such as fire, accidents, or other disasters. Conduct periodic evacuation and emergency drills.
  • Manages and supports corporate, local, state, and federal health and safety regulatory compliance.
  • Provides reports, documentation, and EHS presentations for various EHS compliance/monitoring functions such as hazardous waste shipments, etc. 
  • Ensure that employees receive all training as specified by OSHA, RCRA, NRC, EPA, DEP, TSCA, DOT/HMTA, and other federal state and local regulations on an annual basis.
  • Prepare and submit applicable environmental reports: Annual Storm Water Report, Biennial Hazardous Waste Report, Hazardous Waste Reduction Report, Wastewater Discharge Monitoring Report, Annual EPA Generator Verification Questionnaire, Riverside County Haz Mat Business Emergency Plan and Chemical Inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with AQMD permit conditions and regulations. Maintain records and submit reports as required. Prepare and submit AQMD permit applications as required.
  • Work with local environmental regulatory agencies to monitor and ensure compliance. Prepare for regulatory audits.
  • Facilitates the site(s) safety committee, driving awareness of health and safety related matters within the facility.
  • Participate and Lead assigned sections of Virtual BAGA (EHS site audits).
  • Works with management and maintenance to identify, analyze, address and correct hazards throughout the facility.
  • Ensure adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety and maintenance supplies are on hand. 
  • Manages respirator fit testing program and maintains training records.
  • Oversee 3rd party contractor recycling and construction.
  • Manages satellite waste collection.      Provides containers, labels, and ensures that containers are properly managed.  Collects and transfers waste to 90-day storage area.
  • Ensures Hazardous Waste is removed on a regular basis, stored correctly and shipments are accurately prepared and documented each quarter. 
  • Maintains and services, acid vapor scrubber, neutralization, and acid rooms within permit conditions and with proper PPE.
  • Ensures all sink sumps are monitored and cleaned on a regular basis.
  • Manages evaporator operation for reducing water content from liquid waste. 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Ergonomics, Human Factors, or related field and 5+ years of experience required, Or
  • 6+ years EHS experience in a manufacturing environment applying/monitoring government and relevant OSHA/CAL-OSHA, SCAQMD, and other environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification required, confined space rescue, SCBA, and incident command system and certifications are maintained. 
  • Laser Safety Officer certification preferred. 
  • Radiation Safety Officer certification preferred. 
  • RCRA certification preferred. 
  • Forklift Certified/Train the Trainer preferred
  • Associate Safety Professional/Certified Safety Professional preferred. 
  • Prior experience implementing complex EHS programs.
  • Understands general principles and key liabilities associated with OSHA, EPA, AQMD, and other applicable government regulations associated with EHS. Research and reports on key questions related to these regulations.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of tools.

  • Ability to read, understand and implement OSHA/CAL-OSHA, SCAQMD, Hazardous Waste, Wastewater Discharge, Storm Water, Hazardous Materials and other environmental, health, and safety regulations as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills and the ability to comprehend and communicate at multiple levels within and outside the organization.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details

Working Conditions

  • Office, 100% on-site 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift when required
  • Respond to the sites during off hours for emergencies or power outages including weekends
  • Must have the ability to work with employees in a multi-cultural, global team environment

Physical Requirements

  • You must be able to wear a respirator and other appropriate equipment. Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. from ground level with or without assistance
  • Must be able to drive a forklift
