Volunteer Job Description
Job Title: Tutor – Math & Science
Length of Term: Ongoing, minimum 12 weeks
Department: Skills Training
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours/week
Reports to: Skills Department Coordinator
Time of Day: Between 4:00–6:00 pm on weekdays
Purpose of the Position:
The Trades Training program is a full-time five-month pre-apprenticeship program for Calgarians, including Canadian citizens or permanent residents or refugees, interested in pursuing a career in the Trades. The program provides 12 weeks of upgrading (Math, Science, Communication, Digital Skills, Job Search, and Essential Skills), technical training at SAIT, safety/first aid certification, as well as a work experience placement. Tutors work one-on-one with participants of Trades Training programs to assist them in learning material taught in their Math, Science, and Communication courses to prepare for their pre-apprenticeship entrance exam (Alberta Government Apprenticeship and Industry Training). Our current programs fall within the Category A and B minimum entrance requirements, which are equivalent to Math 10-3, Math 20-3, and Science 10 skill levels (https://tradesecrets.alberta.ca/sources/pdfs/entrance_requirements.pdf).
We are currently seeking Math & Science tutors to work with our upcoming Trades program participants.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Work through subject material with participants, either one-on-one or in small groups once per week (or as required) for the duration of the program
- Build a relationship with the participants to understand and accommodate their learning individual needs
- Share feedback related to participant progress with the administrators, instructors, and/or facilitators as required throughout tutoring
- Break down course materials, provide examples, and help the participant understand content that will be on the exam
- Record each tutoring session, if requested by Momentum
Skills, Experience, Qualifications
- Previous experience tutoring, coaching, or teaching high-school level mathematics and/or science
- Previous experience working with multi-cultural and/or highly barriered participants would be considered an asset
- Experience in adult education would be considered an asset
- Fluent in English
- A clear police information check will be required for this position
