Senior Job Accountant
Job Summary:
The Senior Job Accountant will aid the department in reviewing construction budgets, approving invoices, and ensuring that construction billings are issued to clients and payments are collected. This position will also assist the team in reducing time to close, increase department efficiencies, improve internal controls, and prepare and analyze key areas of the business. Additionally, this position will assist in training and development of other job accountants during the new hire onboarding process.

Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 400 employees and nearly 50 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.
Responsibilities and Duties:

- Review and code invoices for approval. Provide invoices to the project manager for approval.
- Process job cost adjustments in the accounting system.
- Coordination of master service agreements and lien waivers in conjunction with PM, PE, and Vendor Compliance Specialist.
- Set up Purchase Orders and Sub-contract agreements at job inception.
- Collaboration with the project engineer to ensure quantity adjustments are accounted for and entered in the accounting system.
- Manage change order compliance/process including, input to accounting system, estimating system updates and contract tie out.
- Set up new job phases as requested by project engineer and project manager.
- Understand State Construction Registry (SCR) and Lien Waver forms to provide support to compliance and AP.
- Participate in Pre-construction meeting(s) (internal and external)
- Coordination with project engineer to provide financial reporting and weekly scorecard updates.
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance controls within the accounting function in collaboration with the Accounting Manager.
- Assist with the development of project budget(s) and forecast(s).
- Maintain project files for audit-ready purposes.
- Assist with month end close for areas of responsibility.
- Review job accountant work as listed above.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, accounting standards, and regulatory changes, and share this knowledge with the team.
- Lead and support the growth and proficiency of job accountants.
- Fill in and make sure job accountant work is completed on time and accurately.
- Maintain and update job accountant handbook/manual.
- Assist in testing and implementation of new processes.
- Assist in preparation of monthly work in process schedules.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A minimum of one year experience in accounting and construction. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, practices, and procedures is essential. Proficiency in financial reporting, budgeting, and cost analysis.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other relevant software applications is also important.
- Ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail are crucial.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential for interacting with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and time management skills are necessary for managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and prioritizing workload effectively.
