The Role:

The Vice President of Finance plays a crucial role in guiding our agency toward financial sustainability while supporting our mission and ensuring operational excellence. As a strategic leader, the VP of Finance will maximize the efficiency of financial systems and procedures across all agency departments while providing excellent customer service. The VP of Finance will also serve as a key resource for the Finance Committee, Board of Directors, and the SVP for Finance and Administration in developing financial strategies, including reporting, modeling, and forecasting. In addition, the Vice President of Finance is responsible for establishing effective financial processes, controls, and policies, while serving as a hands-on leader who manages, motivates, and mentors the Finance Department.

This opportunity arises due to the upcoming retirement of a long-tenured team member. The successful candidate will benefit from a thoughtful transition period, working closely with the incumbent to gain valuable institutional knowledge and ensure continuity of excellence.


Essential Responsibilities:

Reporting, Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Develop, prepare, and present accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements, budget-to-actual reports, and forecasts.
  • Lead the preparation of annual budgets and provide flexible projections that support decision-making by senior leadership, the Finance Committee, Board of Directors, lenders, SVPs, and donors.
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, concise presentations tailored to diverse audiences.

Financial Modeling & Strategic Analysis

  • Create and maintain financial models to forecast performance, evaluate new programs, capital projects, and rate-setting.
  • Provide long-range recommendations and insights to guide strategic planning and organizational growth.

Stewardship of Agency Resources

  • Oversee restricted, grant, and general funds while ensuring compliance with donor and grant restrictions.
  • Manage pledge tracking and reporting for the Finance Committee, including investment returns, asset allocations, and usage.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and city requirements, including submissions to external auditors and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead annual independent and pension audits and monitor the agency’s 403(b) retirement plan.
  • Maintain supporting Excel documentation to ensure accuracy and accountability.

Operational Efficiency & Collaboration

  • Establish and monitor financial systems, policies, and internal controls to ensure best practices across the agency.
  • Partner with Admissions, Development, Finance, HR, and Program teams, as well as external donors and grantors, gather data, align business requirements, and deliver financial insights.
  • Identify opportunities for process and system improvements and lead the implementation of changes that enhance efficiency and impact.

 

Education & Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting with 10+ years of experience, OR Master’s degree with 5+ years (or equivalent combination).

 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Solid knowledge of the full accounting cycle and GAAP financial reporting.

· Experience with 990 returns, tax-exempt filings, and state cost reports.

· Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate strategy into operations.

· Excellent communication and planning skills; able to present complex data clearly.

· Proven leadership in finance, accounting, budgeting, fiscal control, and team management.

· Advanced financial modeling skills and Excel expertise; proficiency with financial systems/software.

· Ability to guide teams through change in a fast-paced environment.

· Professional demeanor in working with leadership, staff, parents, and donors.
