Intern, Thermo-Fluids Engineer, Drive Unit
Location: Newark, CA
Team Description:
· The Drive Unit Thermo-Fluids team focuses on thermal management of the components in and around the electric motor assembly.
· We utilize fundamental fluid dynamics and heat transfer to analyze designs.
· We often conduct 3D CFD of internal flows and two-phase flows related to cooling and lubrication.
· We also define tests to evaluate cooling and lubrication characteristics, and work closely with the Testing team, Electromagnetic and Design teams.
· Looking to hire a Spring Co-op intern starting in January 2025 for 12 to 24 weeks.
Role/Responsibilities:
· Work on CFD projects that consist of tasks including but not limited to - CAD modeling, geometry cleanup, meshing and CFD simulations of motor designs. The calculations may contain a sub-component part, or the full motor design
· Collaborate with the cross functional teams, including Drive unit design, Electromagnetics, System modeling and Test teams
· Will work on projects that include experimental thermo-fluids analysis, which contain tasks related to test setup, calibration, data collection, post-processing, etc
· Build analytical models related to heat transfer and fluid flow mechanisms around motor thermals and the related components
Preferred Qualifications:
· Fundamental knowledge and passionate history of projects in heat transfer and fluid dynamics
· Understanding of heat transfer modes, fluid network analyses, and 1-D thermal modeling
· In-depth knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics fundamentals and experience with CFD tools
· Geometry cleanup skills in a CAD package (SpaceClaim/Discovery/DM preferred)
· Experience with ANSYS Fluent and Workbench for meshing, solving, and post processing
· Understanding of typical e-motor cooling mechanisms
· Excellent communication skills with people of varying technical ability in your field
· Clear and concise documentation practices
· The capability to design experiments to validate your analysis and ideas
Nice to Have:
· Relevant projects related to heat transfer, two-phase flow and lubrication analysis
· Experience with thermal nodal network analyses
· Experience in automation of ANSYS Workbench related workflows
· Experience of fluid dynamics analysis using SPH CFD tools is a plus
· MATLAB, Python and related scripting knowledge
· Projects related to electromagnetics and e-motors
· Experience in structural FEA analysis
· Practical hands-on experience with validation and experimental measurements
· Understanding of Lucid’s proprietary motor design from available tech-talks
· Able to work in a fast-paced environment
Education:
· Field(s) of study: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field
· Currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree program at an accredited university
· Proof of enrollment in current or into next program (MS)
Program Information:
· Timing: January to June 2025
· Duration of Internship: This is a 12 to 24 week internship, Spring Co-Op
· Work Location & Environment: This position will be in Newark, CA, and is fully in-person. You must be prepared to start onsite for your first day of employment. The working environment will be a mix of lab & office work.
· Compensation: Student compensation is based on location and current degree level, non-negotiable ranging from $40 to $60.
· Relocation: May be provided on a case to case basis.
· Housing/Transportation: You must provide your own living arrangements and transportation in the local area.
· Background Check: All offers of employment are contingent on clearing a background check.
