SUMMARY 

To assist the physician while performing endoscopic procedures and to provide appropriate nursing care to the endoscopy population of Brown Medicine under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN).

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently applies the Brown Medicine values of patient care priority, dignity, collaboration, integrity and quality in support of the Brown Medicine mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient care, research excellence and outstanding physician education.  Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the Brown Medicine Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

  • Consistently practices the Brown Medicine Customer Service Standards.
  • In collaboration with the RN, provides direct patient care for patients utilizing and implementing the nursing process: assessments, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Maintains endoscopic instruments and accessories in working order.  Troubleshoots and recognizes malfunctions.
  • Maintains a clean and safe patient care environment, implements and follows infection control procedures according to Brown Medicine policy and professional guidelines, while following unit policy for cleaning and disinfection of equipment. 
  • Demonstrates strong understanding and utilization of infection prevention practices.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies in each endoscopy room.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities; assists in maintaining compliance with the accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards.
  • Seeks guidance, direction and assistance where needed.  Follows Brown Medicine Policy and Procedures at all times and is an active participant in the QI program.
  • Utilizing supplies, equipment and resources to contains costs without compromising delivery of care.
  • Maintains positive behaviors, approaches, attitude and commitment to interpersonal service toward patients, visitors, and/or co-workers.
  • Demonstrates competency in performing diagnostic measures such as lab tests, EKGs, and testing related to endoscope reprocessing.
  • Seeks guidance, direction and assistance where needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality/privacy/security of all patients and Brown Medicine communications/documents.
  • Gains knowledge of all equipment and supplies and is familiar with their location.
  • Participates in staff meetings, and in-services (mandatory and regular).
  • Maintains a clean, pleasant, and safe environment for self/other employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Good command of the English language, both written and verbal
  • Meets the needs of the nursing service as demanded by the schedule, particularly when overtime hours and time changes become necessary
  • Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum Education: High school education
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in some aspect of health care involving patient contact
  • Current certification in BLS

  • Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and/or equipment
