Wage Agency Instructor - Law Enforcement Extension

$45.00/hour

Part-Time Position (Temporary/Casual Staff)

Location: Bryan, TX

The Instructor will be responsible for delivering training across various courses within the Law Enforcement Extension program, including but not limited to crime scene investigation, crime scene documentation, photography, friction ridge comparison and/or processing, death/medicolegal investigations, forensic-based analysis (DNA/forensic genetic genealogy (FGG), firearms, toxicology, drugs, trace evidence), legal aspects of the court system/ laws governing criminal court cases. Utilizing expertise in adult learning theories and various learning styles, the instructor will maximize learner success and ensure effective course delivery by using TEEX formatted curriculum. This role requires the use of various instructional media to present course materials effectively such as Microsoft PowerPoint. Additionally, the Instructor will be responsible for overseeing and evaluating student performance, articulating procedures and regulations, and implementing all necessary safety measures. Upon request of the program, the instructor may also adapt and modify course curricula as needed to meet learner needs and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base to align with current and future instructional requirements. As part of a statewide network of instructors, residency in Bryan/College Station is not required for this position.

This position reports to the Training Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college in criminal justice, law, forensic science, or related field.

  • 3 years of experience in law enforcement, forensic science-based laboratory or related field.

  • 2 years of experience training adult learners in law enforcement and/or forensic science related fields.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in law enforcement, forensic science laboratory or related field.

  • 3 years of experience training adult learners in law enforcement and/or forensic science related fields.

  • Advanced degree and/or graduate-level certificate in criminal justice or science-based field. (includes Juris Doctorate (JD degrees))

  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Instructor Certification or equivalent Instructor development course.

  • Certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI), International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), American Board of Criminalistics (ABC), and/or other related law enforcement or forensic science-based certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

  • Ability to regularly use a computer/keyboard.

  • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours a day.

  • Physical conditioning consistent with occasional set up of classrooms, movement of training equipment, and instructional materials up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to conduct training indoors/outdoors in all-weather.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to manipulate training equipment.

  • Ability to facilitate course content and demonstrate common police procedures or related content.

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system or security industry and course curriculum.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff.

  • Knowledge of basic office software and instructional programs.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

  • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.

  • Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone and fax machine.

  • Training equipment.

Notifications:

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position requires up to 25% travel.

  • This is a wage position established to accommodate a temporary organizational need.  As such, TEEX does not guarantee any set number of hours or length of employment in this role.

  • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

  • This position is eligible for telecommuting.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

Training Delivery - 85%:

  • Delivers course instruction and provides technical assistance for the LEX Program.

  • Ensures the course is effectively and efficiently presented in accordance with TEEX curriculum and customer contracts.

  • Develops customized lesson plans, outlines, training aids, manuals, and scenarios for practical application.

  • Conducts quality control of scenarios, exercises, and custom course developments.

  • Arrives before the course is scheduled to ensure the classrooms and training areas are prepared for the delivery and are set up in a safe manner.

  • Ensures all training is conducted in accordance with established safety guidelines.

  • Ensures all participants have achieved the terminal objectives of the course.

  • Ensures training materials, training aids, and classrooms are secured upon completion of the course.

  • Maintains subject matter expertise on topics of instruction.

Training Documentation - 10%:

  • Collects forms at the start of class and ensures students sign the attendance roster.

  • Maintains appropriate student activity documentation.

  • Ensures course evaluations are collected and returned as instructed by program training coordinator.

  • Completes all required course documents in a timely manner and participates in course debrief with the instructional team, as applicable, to determine delivery areas of improvement.

Fiscal Responsibility - 5%:

  • Makes sound fiscal decisions in the planning and execution of course deliveries. 

  • Completes required administrative work to include student records, travel submissions, and time/effort paperwork accurately and in a timely manner, in accordance with Division, Agency, and Program requirements.

Other Duties:

  • Completes periodic mandatory TEEX training and professional development training as assigned.

  • Interacts professionally and wears appropriate professional attire representing the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in a positive manner.

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
