About the Department

Promotes and provides proactive security services to effectively provide for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds in accordance with the school security handbook.

Primary Job Functions

Job Duties
Carries out all aspects of the School Safety Program including enforcement of the school’s pre-established disciplinary measures program as follows:

Position Duties

Monitoring and Patrolling

• Reports discipline infractions, unauthorized visitors and acts of vandalism to Site Administrator.
• Notifies site administrators, police and appropriate emergency personnel of any potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
• Ensures a smooth traffic flow of students through the hallways, assisting students with on-time arrival to class or assigned locations.
• Utilize school surveillance camera system to monitor activity and review footage as needed.
• Notifies appropriate personnel, immediately, of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
• Patrols all areas of school buildings and grounds constantly including halls, stairwells, rest rooms, courtyards, entrances and parking lots for the purpose of 
• maintaining high visibility and order;
• preventing trespassing, loitering, and class cutting; 
• protecting persons and property; and
• assuring compliance with all school/site rules and regulations.

Student and Staff Interaction

• Is readily available to staff and students via the telephone or by two-way radio as needed.
• Assists students and visitors with problems and refers them to proper staff members.
• Questions unauthorized persons on or around school premises, advises as to school rules, and either directs visitors to the principal's office, or asks them to leave.
• Calmly addresses students, Principals, Teacher’s, or parent’s concerns.
• Informs the School Administrator of all problems, incidents, and conditions affecting the security of the school buildings and grounds so that the Administrator can take appropriate action.

Searches and Seizure

• Use hand held metal detector for student searches in accordance with established guidelines.
• Perform pat down student searches in accordance with established guidelines.
• Accompanies the School Administrator(s) on searches for drugs, weapons, or explosive devices.

Documentation

• Records and completes incident reports in a timely manner.
• Observes and records irrational student behavior.
• Protect confidentiality of records and information about students or staff, using discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines.

Emergency Response

• Responds to emergency calls promptly.
• Assists when emergencies occur within the school building; 
• Restrains persons engaged in disorderly conduct in accordance with established procedures.
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

• Work in various temperatures including conditions of extreme heat or cold
• Protect one self and others from harm’s way
• Physically retrain adults and students in an emergency situation as a last resort in accordance with established guidelines

• Lift up to 50 pounds and ride a golf cart on a moderate basis throughout the day.
• Prioritize and distinguish between important vs. non-important information.
• Report pertinent information to appropriate personnel in a timely manner

• Deescalate volatile students and situations in a non-threatening manner
• Communicate with people in a professional manor
• Must be flexible and be able to work various hours such as early morning, late night and overnight hours to include weekends, based on the needs of each site

Must be able to work to support all sites, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  Education and experience: Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.  Experience dealing with at-risk youth in a school setting and one year work experience in a similar or a comparable job function. Within three (3) month of hire, incumbent must successfully complete the following required training(s):

• CPR certification; First Aid Certification; and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Independent Study courses (IS 100sc Introduction to ICS; IS200, Basic ICS; and IS 700, NIMS)  

Other Qualifications

Terms of Employment:  This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.  

Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Drug Test and extensive Fingerprint and Background Check. Employee is Subject to Random Drug Testing and completion of a Background Check every five (5) years.
