Your impact

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to undertake the role of Software Design Authority (DA) within our Signal Processing (SIP) Platform Team. You will work in a highly demanding and complex team, immersed in full-scale development programmes spanning the breadth of the engineering lifecycle. You will work with the PX CDT Chief Software Engineer (CSE) and SIP Product Designer to ensure our SIP platform development is compliant with our customer’s requirements and any associated standards. You will also support the Team Lead, CSE and Software Development Manager (SDM) to establish a refined process within our development team.

The Processing Core Delivery Team (PX CDT) underpins airborne radar and sensor development in Edinburgh by providing specialist processing expertise in the fields of Waveform Design, Digital Signal Processing, System Modelling and Design, Tracking, Navigation, System Test Solutions, Sensor and Platform Autonomy and Data Fusion. We provide support to the business across the engineering lifecycle from early concept studies through to solution implementation and integration support.

What you’ll bring

We are looking for someone passionate about our radar products, with a focus on delivery and proven experience of nurturing and developing high-performing, successful teams. You will thrive in dynamic environments, with the ability to make decisions quickly under pressure and set a clear technical direction for the team.

As the Software DA within our SIP domain, you will:

  • Lead the definition, and sign-off, of all software planning and process artefacts for the SIP platform software including, but not limited to, Software Development Process (SDP) and associated Work Instructions; Software Configuration Management Plans (SCMP); and Software Verification Plans (SVP).
  • Lead the development of the Software Requirement Specification (SRS), Design Documentation and Validation and Verification strategy for the SIP platform software.
  • Act as point-of-contact to Software Governance for the SIP Platform Team(s) and ensure audits are scheduled with any subsequent actions addressed.
  • Promote an agile approach to engineering, building a culture of experimentation, on host and hardware, and failing fast.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on software processes, software certification standards - including the application of DO-178C and addendums, software architecture (alongside the Product Designer) and integration activities.
  • Develop your own technical expertise in signal processing software to support the next generation of RADAR product development.
  • Develop technical expertise within the team acting as a mentor and a coach to others.
  • You will work with the:
    • PX CDT and Project Chief Software Engineers to ensure our software design artefacts align with project milestones and are developed in accordance with the mandated standards to achieve certification
    • Product Designer, Product Owner, Scrum Master and Software Development Manager to streamline the delivery of our software artefacts and enhance our ways of working

Ideally, we are looking for a proactive engineer and leader, someone with:

  • Experience in signal processing software development and deployment for radar projects.
  • Proven knowledge of DO-178C and the pathway to software certification.
  • Experience in applying governance and guidance on Software Engineering LCM process.
  • Experience in eliciting stakeholder expectations.
  • Proven leadership and decision-making skills in a high complexity, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build trust and respect among engineering teams.
  • Experience of integration, with an understanding of the resultant issues, cost and schedule implications, and potential mitigations
  • Tenacity and determination, with a desire to deliver outputs and results
