About Fairwinds Technologies

Fairwinds Technologies is a U.S.-based engineering firm specializing in Satellite Communications (SATCOM), RF Transmission Systems, Network Design, Systems Integration, and Digital Signal Processing (DSP). We support Command, Control, Communications, and Computer (C4) systems in austere military environments, delivering advanced communications, networking, and IT solutions to defense and civilian agencies worldwide.

Position Overview

Fairwinds Technologies is seeking an RF Test Engineer who will own the definition, development, execution, and continuous improvement of RF test strategies for tactical radios and SATCOM systems. You will translate system requirements into testable verification plans, architect test environments, author procedures, conduct hands-on testing, analyze results, and drive corrective actions with cross-functional teams. This role emphasizes test leadership and administration over pure execution, including building automated test capabilities, maintaining configuration control, and delivering clear, defensible test reports to internal stakeholders and customers.

This role reports to the Chief Technology & Strategy Office and involves close collaboration with customers, Systems Engineering, Hardware, and Software teams to ensure requirements verification, performance characterization, and mission readiness across lab and occasional field environments.

Years of Experience

7–10+ years of progressively responsible experience in RF test engineering across lab and/or field environments, including test development, automation, and data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define test strategies, verification plans, and success criteria mapped to requirements, interface specifications, and compliance standards; ensure coverage across functional, performance, environmental, and interoperability dimensions for tactical radios and SATCOM terminals/modems.
  • Architect end-to-end test setups, including fixtures, signal chains, instrumentation selection, and calibration strategies; ensure measurement uncertainty and traceability are appropriately managed.
  • Author and administer formal test procedures, test readiness reviews, and test reports; maintain version-controlled documentation and evidence packages suitable for customer and government review.
  • Execute RF measurements (e.g., S-parameters, EIRP/ERP, power, modulation quality/EVM, ACPR/OBW, noise figure, spurious/EMI pre-scan, group delay) across approximately 30 MHz–40 GHz using VNAs, spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, power meters, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • Lead root-cause investigations for test anomalies; perform data reduction, statistical analysis, and trend monitoring; drive corrective actions with design, firmware, and systems engineering teams.
  • Develop, extend, and maintain automated test frameworks (e.g., Python with SCPI/PyVISA, instrument drivers, and data pipelines); implement standardized data schemas and dashboards for repeatable, scalable testing.
  • Establish lab best practices for RF safety, calibration, ESD, configuration control, and asset management; manage calibration schedules and post-calibration verification.
  • Plan and conduct integration events and limited field tests for tactical radios (e.g., waveform/interop testing such as SRW or TSM) and SATCOM (e.g., terminal pointing, acquisition, modem/IFL, link performance); define instrumentation, RF safety/MPE controls, data collection plans, and acceptance criteria.
  • Mentor RF technicians and junior engineers in test methods, measurement discipline, and automation basics; provide day-to-day technical direction during test campaigns.
  • Contribute to compliance and certification readiness (e.g., MIL-STD performance, environmental, EMI/EMC pre-compliance), coordinating with external labs as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred or equivalent directly relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ownership of RF test plan development, procedure authorship, and report delivery for complex RF systems, specifically tactical radios and SATCOM subsystems.
  • Proficiency with RF/microwave measurement techniques and instrumentation; strong grasp of measurement uncertainty, fixture de-embedding, and calibration practices.
  • Strong Python skills for test automation and data analysis; experience with SCPI, PyVISA, PySNMP, VISA I/O, and instrument control over LAN/GPIB/USB.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, RF block diagrams, ICDs, and timing/triggering diagrams; familiarity with link budgets, path loss, fading, and antenna patterns.
  • Experience applying configuration management/version control (e.g., Git or SVN) for test code, procedures, and data; disciplined documentation and traceability habits.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and technical writing skills with a track record of clear, audit-ready test artifacts.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and able to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET clearance.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SATCOM terminals (e.g., X/Ka/Ku-band, GEO/MEO/LEO modems, BUC/LNB, IFL) and tactical radios (e.g., SINCGARS, SRW, TSM, WNW, MUOS, HF).
  • Exposure to environmental and EMI/EMC testing (pre-compliance and coordination with certified labs).
  • Familiarity with MATLAB, LabVIEW, NI PXI, Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Tektronix, or Spirent toolchains; experience with data visualization and dashboarding.
  • Background implementing CI/CD concepts for test automation (e.g., scripted regressions, golden datasets, automated report generation).
  • Prior leadership of test campaigns, including mentoring technicians and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may provide day-to-day technical direction to RF technicians and junior engineers during test planning and execution but does not include formal direct reports.
