About the Department

The MBTA is seeking one Engineering intern to assist the Railroad Operations (RROPS) team in gathering, analyzing, and reporting information related to equipment maintenance. The RROPS department manages hundreds of assets such as locomotives, blind trailer coaches, and control trailer coaches across multiple maintenance facilities around the Boston area. It will be the duty of the Engineering Intern to identify key information regarding systems, as assigned.The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a sincere interest in the transportation field and who can work full-time (40 hours / week) for six (6) or more months.

This position is for undergraduate students only, who have not yet received their Bachelor’s degree (graduate students will not be considered).

Position Duties

• Gather and organize information, locations, pictures, etc. of assigned asset type, such as brakes, engines, propulsion electronics, etc. 
• Analyze drawings, schematics, data, and equipment systemwide with RROPS Engineers.
• Collect information and data on equipment-related systems while traveling the MBTA system.
• Organize data for ease of use and navigation using programs such as Microsoft Office, CAD, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), etc.
• Utilize CAD software to produce, alter, and analyze drawings.
• Inspect / audit service contracts. 

• Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.

• Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrolled, for entire duration of employment, in the Bachelor’s degree program of an accredited college / university in an engineering field (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or manufacturing).

• Ability to work independently with limited instructions / oversight.
• Ability to gather and organize information.
• Ability to investigate normal and abnormal situations for diagnosis.
• Ability to understand mechanical / electrical systems from drawings, experience, or field investigations.
• Ability to work in Somerville, MA.
• Ability to navigate and ride the entire MBTA system. 
• Above average computer skills, including Microsoft Office, CAD, Adobe Acrobat, etc. 
• Above average speaking, listening, and reading skills in English (successful applicants must have the English language skills required for effective performance of the position).
• Ability to follow Blue Signal rules and requirements (MBTA will provide training, and candidates must successfully pass an exam).
• Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
• Authorized to work in the United States (international students in CPT, STEM, or OPT programs through a university are eligible to apply).
