REPORTS TO: Program Administrator of the Hearing-Impaired Program
FUNCTION: Provide sign language interpreter services to those students EC-12th grade identified to require the service.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning and Preparation
Maintain a notebook of vocabulary and assignments to be available to substitute interpreters
Review lesson plans, multimedia, and academic vocabulary in advance to ensure accurate translation.
Collaborate with teachers, speech-language pathologists, and related service providers to adapt materials and clarify content
B. Classroom Environment
Classroom teachers should be informed of accommodations and modifications and the IEP goals and objectives
Parents should be aware that the classroom and student accommodations are being implemented.
Substitute in a class as assigned, when another interpreter is absent
Instruction
Interpret as indicated in an Individualized Education Plan for hearing impaired students.
Interpret for hearing impaired students in counseling and discipline situations.
Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, including receptive and expressive skills appropriate for K–12 academic vocabulary.
Assist diagnostic personnel in communicating with hearing impaired students during evaluation situations.
Professional Responsibilities
Assist in effecting communication between regular education teachers and special program personnel.
Participate in workshops for hearing impaired students and/or school personnel regarding the role of the interpreter as needed.
Exhibit professionalism and commitment through punctuality and attendance.
Meet accepted standards of professional behavior
Follow the established district calendar unless otherwise cleared with the hearing-impaired Sisupervisor.
Demonstrate flexibility in all situations to the in betterment of the education of the hearing-impaired program.
Will take all precautions to protect students’ equipment, materials, and facilities.
Participate in staff development and school improvement activities in order to maintain professional growth.
Participate in events outside of the regularly scheduled work day such as orientation, open houses, or conferences.
Performs other duties as assigned by the SOWIC administration.
Demonstrate the ability to perform physical tasks associated with job.
Demonstrate the ability to perform activities that utilize the necessary technology tools available including web -based data systems.
E. Evaluation
Formal and informal observations and conferences shall occur as needed or desired by the professional staff member or Executive Director of SOWIC, Assistant Director, and Program Administrator and shall be an ongoing process.
