About the Department
Performs complex and challenging transactions and operates specialized databases with independence, efficiency, and accuracy. Applies judgment to screen incoming loads in compliance with solid waste regulations. Invoice accounts, reviews transactions, maintains databases, and runs regular accounting reports for daily transactions.
Position Duties
Utilizes complex specialized software to evaluate, review, analyze, and process transactions associated with the Solid Waste Center (SWC).
Screens all loads coming into the landfill and evaluates compliance with SWC waste diversion programs.
Operates scales and assesses materials; determines appropriate charges and collects fees; directs customers to appropriate pick-up or drop-off locations.
Operates the cash tender system and maintains a cash drawer; enters cash, check, and credit card payments accurately into the accounting system for daily reconciliation; reconciles cash drawer to the Solid Waste Center center’s accounting system.
Delivers and promotes exceptional internal and external customer service while assisting and educating the public with understanding solid waste procedures; applies critical thinking skills with the highest care and accuracy.
Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
This position follows a sequence:
Level I:
Up to 1 year of customer service experience.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Level II (in addition to Level I):
1-3 years of experience in cash handling and customer service.
OSHA 24-hour HAZWOPER, SWANA waste screening course.
Mastery of scalehouse software system and Motherlode point of sale system.
Level III (in addition to Level II):
Three plus years of customer service and cash handling.
Completion of SWANA certification in Zero Waste Planning or equivalent.
Knowledge Of:
General County and office policies and procedures.
Records management principles and practices.
Customer service techniques, including de-escalation.
Basic accounting and budgeting principles and practices.
Skill In:
Organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks.
Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
Microsoft Office Products and Google Suite.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing.
Other Qualifications
Work is performed throughout the Solid Waste Center and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, dangerous machinery, loud noises, and fumes.
