We are seeking a Principal CAD Designer responsible for creating and revising detailed drawings using 3-Dimensional modeling tools.  The Designer is responsible for the integrity of the product, including models and engineering drawings, ensuring designs are suitable for manufacture, inspection, and translation to vendors.  The Designer may be expected to interact directly with surgeons and cross-functional stakeholders such as Marketing, Regulatory, Quality, Testing, and Sales. In the role they should also demonstrate initiative, strong technical skills, and the ability to design mating components in implant and instrument systems. Occasional travel and mentoring of junior designers is expected.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the design of new products and improvements to existing products from conception to launch while complying with existing procedures, standards, and Quality System Requirements. 
  • Proven ability to meet critical project timelines
  • Designs innovative, clinically driven solutions by anticipating surgical needs and transforms concepts into commercialized implant and instrument systems.  Ability to design mating components and applying advanced tolerance analysis.
  • Generates CAD models and engineering drawings primarily within Solidworks.
  • Designs complex mechanisms/instrumentation and implements advanced design principles.
  • Designs components for manufacturability, inspectability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects throughout all states of the development process. 
  • Creates invention disclosures and IP generation. 
  • Works simultaneously with development, manufacturing, tool and process engineers to create complex 3-D surfaced or solid models of orthopedic implants, provisionals and instrumentation.

Expected Areas of Competence (i.e. knowledge, skills, and abilities) 

  • Innovative in development of new designs.  Ability to develop patentable features and designs.
  • Professional, concise, tactful, and effective in communications. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation and delivery of presentations tailored to technical and executive audiences
  • Advanced working knowledge of drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).  Ability to perform advanced tolerance analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure product and process compliance with applicable Quality Assurance and Regulatory requirements in the medical device industry
  • Ability to manage and set priorities for multiple complex projects and deliverables concurrently  
  • Expertise in CAD design and engineering drawings, preferably using SolidWorks, with an emphasis on design for manufacturability and system integration
  • Adapts quickly to new technologies
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and MS Project, with experience in reporting and tracking project metrics

 

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Two year technical degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of experience product design, ideally in Orthopedic devices

 Up to 5%
