Job Summary:

The House Supervisor has the responsibility of overseeing the day to day operations of the organization and accountability of those actions after normal business hours.  The House Supervisor provides leadership and guidance to the employees in the absence of the department leaders.  Provides oversite in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the organization.                                                             

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Functions within the scope of practice as defined by respective certification/license

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs adjustments to work assignments as necessary to achieve efficient and effective unit operation  
  • Addresses and resolves customer complaints and/or concerns independently whenever possible.  
  • Implements Chain of Command when necessary
  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures
  • Adheres to time and attendance requirements
  • Successfully completes organizational and departmental orientation and/or mandatory annual training, competencies, and in-services
  • Completes annual employee health requirements
  • Demonstrates participation in organizational, nursing, and departmental communications, which include but are not limited to unit meetings, intranet, and emails
  • Assists in control of organization resources
  • Participates and promotes activities regarding quality and process improvement
  • Delegates appropriately according to skill level
  • Anticipates, requests, and accepts assistance from others
  • Adheres to Infection Prevention Plan and policies
  • Assesses and maintains department specific equipment and products

Supervisors Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Accountable for supervising hospital operation, routine departmental patient care activities, department personnel, staff development and discipline   
  • Accountable for budgeting and monitoring department equipment, capital, FTEs and supplies
  • Demonstrates management skills that fosters a unified team work environment within the department
  • Improve departmental/processes through best practices.
  • Monitor the progression of operational goals
  • Participates and promotes activities regarding quality improvement, team participation, mandatory inservices, training and departmental unit meetings or other activities as required
  • Functions as patient advocate by collaborating with physicians, nursing and ancillary services, communicating patient needs and wishes to physician and/or other members of the healthcare team and communicates Plan of Care to patient and family
  • Communicates effectively with physicians, nursing and ancillary staff, coworkers, patients and families on a need-to-know basis
  • Participates in hospital wide and departmental performance improvement activities

Position Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse – BSN required
  • MSN preferred
  • Current licensure in the State of Illinois as a Registered Nurse
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current ACLS ccertification or within 3 month of hire date
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing leadership experience, management experience preferred
  • Computer literate.  Computer literacy content focuses on computer basics and the use of generic software applications such as word processing, presentation software, and the use of electronic communication such as email. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use critical thinking skills
  • Strong leadership skills relative to motivation and decision making
  • Ability to problem solve effectively

Preferred Skills and Abilities:  

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Budgeting experience, if applicable
  • PDCA experience, if applicable

Physical Demands:

  • Sit or stand for a prolonged period of time
  • Regularly exposed to body fluids with the risk of bloodborne pathogens or airborne pathogens
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.

Lifting/transferring

  • Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics
  • Able to transfer or position clients greater than 50 pounds with assistance or assistive devices
  • Requesting assistance is expected 

Pushing/pulling

  • Required in positioning and moving clients and medical equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Stooping/kneeling/reaching

  • Considerable twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching during many aspects of clients care (bathing, making beds, setting up and monitoring medical equipment)

Motor coordination and manual dexterity

  • Able to use one or both hands for grasping, pushing/pulling and fine maculation to perform procedures

Tactile sensation

  • Able to feel vibrations, temperature changes and pulses

Eyesight/vision

  • Near acuity: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction.
  • Far acuity: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more; with 20/40 vision or better with or without correction
  • Able to accurately read labels and prepare medications. Read written communication and monitor medical equipment findings.

Temperament

  • Ability to adapt to continually changing environment 
  • Able to accept constructive criticism and accept own limits
  • Emotional and mental stability needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients, families and health team members.

Hearing

  • Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 5 ft.
